Hey guys

First of all, Happy Thanksgiving to all North Americans! Secondly, I just bout my first revolver (S&M 629, 4 inch barrel) and I plan to outfit the gun for OWB CCW. Learning what I like for concealed carry with my semi autos was a costly game of trial and error, so I'm hoping you guys can spare me some of that process as I get into wheel guns. If you have any insight to the areas below, it would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance!

OWB Holster: I'm looking for something to hold high and tight. In semi autos I like kydex with no retention or thumb breaks (but everything I find for big revolvers seems to be leather with thumb breaks... not sure why)

Grips: Since this is for carry, I'm guessing the big, shirt-grabbing rubber grips might have to go.

Sights: I've come to love tritium and/or fiber optic sights for my semi autos. Anything like TruGlo TFOs for revolvers out there?

Speedloaders: I've found the Safariland and Speedbeez, but are there others I should consider? The 5 Stars look nice, but I'm guessing I'd like push-button rather than turn style in a stressful self-defense situation (admittedly based on zero experience).

Your 629 is a pretty big gun to carry concealed, but it can be done.
I don't generally carry my 29 concealed, but I tried it with the holster
in the photo between 4 & 5 O'clock. It rides high enough and concealed
well enough under a Duluth T Shirt.
The holster is a Myres #614 Threepersons, which is about as easy to
find for an N Frame as hens teeth, but many, including some on the
forum, are making nice replicas.
The wood stocks are by Herrett's. The speed loader is HKS.
Good luck.

I had a 3" 629-6 and this is what I used(it's a Savoy) with Pachmyer grips(which are wide but narrow so it hold to the body tight)..

adcs7955,

I am NOT trying to start a war of words here - certainly NOT my intention! The M629 is a fine Revolver but not really conducive for long term CCW - it's just TOO big, heavy and bulky - been there-done that! I am trying to SAVE you the money and hassle of outfitting yourself and spending hundreds to turn this into a CCW, JUST TO FIND OUT that what I am saying is true.

I'd much rather see you put the money, time and effort into a well though out CCW gun and rig. I know TOO MANY GUYS who have tried to justify and turn their large frame guns into CCW's and it never works for long. Aside from which, while the .44 Magnum is a great round on Game Animals, it is not the best SD round - too much penetration, noise, flash and recoil. I would hate to have to account and live with where a .44 Magnum round went after being fired and either passing through the intended target or missing completely! Too much liability!

I've been CCW-ing for almost 40 years now and have TRIED carrying full sized pistols and Revolvers on a daily basis - it did NOT work out to put it mildly!!! If you disagree with me than go for it. I suppose if you learn first hand you will never forget the experience. Good luck in which ever way you proceed.

I have to agree with Chief38, your N frame is a bit big for CCW. That said, if it is all that you have, then make the best of it.

First and foremost, I would suggest that you practice with, and carry 44 Specials. Less chance of over penetration, greater chance of connecting with your target, and with a hit, it will still bleed a lot. For grips, I would recommend that you look at a set of Hogue Monogrips (I have them on my PPC K38 and my Model 36-6 carry gun), they look good and they fill the hand. For an OWB holster, I would suggest that you look at a belt slide, such as those offered by Deltatech. The advantage of the belt slide is: no thumb strap, it hugs the body, and it is less leather to clear.

I think I should clarify why I'm asking about this as a CCW. I want all my pistols to be ready for carry, although I may not actually do it. I definitely get that the N-frame is too big for EDC. If I do carry the thing it would have to be winter with some big clothes. I already carry 3 other pistols regularly, all of which can fit under summer clothes.

Also, I can't imagine actually carrying 44 mag... but rather the 44 specials. I'd prefer to keep my ear drums in tact (which is one reason why I didn't for for the 357 mag).

Thanks for the tips so far!

Having a carry option for everything doesn't necessitate CCW. You could build a very nice open/field carry rig. You're basically doing it as a side-hobby, anyway.

Listen to Chief38, he's spot on. My Model 29 has a six inch barrel, so I've never tried to CCW. I have carried a full size all steel 1911 as well as my 4" Model 19. They both physically hurt after a few hours. If you still want to hump a 44mag, that's up to you. Maybe you can pull it off.
