Help me decide 686 grips

You dressing up for the night or going to work?

What grips are these?

Good thread. I'm glad I found it, I am also thinking about a set for my 686+ 3".
Do they sell Talo grips separate? I like the look of the new set.

With a 3" 686 you have a gun best suited for concealed carry, which means many of the grips shown to you here are unsuitable. What you should look for is a grip that extends beyond the grip frame as little as possible, possibly forcing you to compromise on how well you like the grips for range use. Yours is a sizeable gun that is not so easy to conceal. Grip length is critical, as is eliminating any angles on the grip end.

You didn't say in what role this gun would serve. Normally a 3" or less is for concealment, with that short a barrel compromising any other application.

Here is my 3" 66 with the Nill's as it is the same grip frame as a snub 686. It strikes a good balance of letting me get all my fingers on the grip and perfectly fits my hand, without anything extra.

Those look really nice. Is the wood texturing grippy? Or does it feel smooth in hand?

ahrends

+1 on Ahrends grips; have them on a 686 and a 617.... partial to retro combats with finger grooves.... both guns also fit my wifes small hands thanks to the finger grooves.... I even added S&W medallions (don't remember where I bought them, but they look very, well, S&W to me... J

They are grippy. I like these because they are grippy in the right place and smooth around the back and outside where clothing lies against when concealed.

I am also a big fan of Ahrends and have a bunch.

They should look nice for most of $250 for a set. It is still not a very good carry style in my opinion. A 3" gun is just a different matter.

Hey, it's a 3" 66....:D. I know they are expensive and not boot grips, but they are not huge either. What they do that I love is when I grasp the gun and lock it down, the sights come into alignment for me perfectly. Grips are VERY personal, and everyone has different needs, but the reason I use Nill's on guns like this and my competition revolver because of how perfectly they fit my hand, and really help me to get things aligned without effort.

Sir,

I have a pair like nyeti's(except they're square butt). Nill calls the texturing "stippling". It is a rough surface designed to provide a more sure grip on the gun, as with checkering. I don't like it myself(don't like checkering, either); and kind of wish I'd gotten something different. Oh, well; to each his own.

Regards,
Andy

Do you carry it concealed? You do what works for you. I just have my own opinion about what I would recommend.

I need to get leather ordered, but I have carried them on other guns concealed. Like I said in another post, grips are very personal. I totally respect your opinion and my post was intended to be a little more tongue and cheek than you likely took it. I am a big HK guy, so I am used to spending stupid money for things. The guns I have Nills on are mostly the more expensive rare Smith's. Of course I have one that is the dumbest gun ever on paper....Model 10 3" Puerto Rican police gun that was sent for the whole treatment at Robar, and wears Nills....I will likely never get my money back out of that one:eek:.

I was amazed that this thread went all the way to 24 entries before somebody got around to mentioning the FGSC grips that were factory original on many Smiths when that gun came out. If the prices they are commanding on flea-Bay and other auction sites are any indication, they are very popular. I've got the square butt version on my no-dash Model 686 w/6" barrel and have a hard time imagining it any other way. The round butt grips are a little hard to find, but IMHO are worth the search if they fit your hand anything like as well as they do mine! Remember though, grip to hand fit is intensely personal and YMMV! ;)

Well I made the call. Went with Culina cocobolo round but combats. Thanks to you all I saw that cocobolo is now endangered so I got my order in quickly. Jennifer Was very nice to deal with. It will be 10 weeks before I get them. Maybe by that time I will figure out how to post a picture. Thanks for all your help.

My 586 wearing some old worn comfy Herrett grips. These were previously on a NYPD officer's gun according the person I bought them from. Bob
