If you had $500 to spend on a new or used handgun, what would you buy?

Probably an M&Pc. But need to mention, we just got an Academy Sports- small town in SC, just south of Charlotte. Been trying to talk myself out of buying a new Mossberg Tactical 22- AR frame- only $299 MSRP. ent to Academy today to pick up cheap ammo (grand opening sale) and wouldn't ya know it- they have one in stock, few places do, and it's only $260.
Sorry, had to relay my "trouble." But again, as to the question, M&Pc if I got a handgun.

I'm really tempted to pick up this NIB 442 that a guy on a local forum is selling for $380. I already have the 642, and love it. May have to go to the dark side for a 442. Or maybe the Rock Island Tactical .45 ACP the LGS has in the cabinet for $460?

In my neck of the woods you can find a used Springfield XD in the $500.00 range.... I have a .40 and a .45, and have good friends who have them in 9mm and two more in .40 again. My thought is 4 owners 5 guns and everyone happy, makes for a pretty good review. I cannot vouch for the others but my .40 gets a pretty fair amount of use and has yet to give me any issues.

Depends what it is being used for (I assume CC or home defense). Do you know a caliber/ physical pistol size you'd like? Are you only looking at S&W or are you open to other brands as well? All these things can help us help you if your trying to decide on a firearm.

My advice, do a lot of research on what you think you'd like from answering questions like I posted above and go out and rent a few you may be looking at. Never know if you'll like something until you try one out.

As for me personally, either a 442 or 642 is my next firearm purchase

$500, I'd find a real good deal on a revolver. Probably a K frame 2-3 inch.

Just bought a M&P 45... no regrets! If I were going to buy a used handgun it would be a 586/686.

Thanks Matt. Those are all good suggestions and thank you for your thoughts. I've owned several handguns over the many years, but right now I can't decide what I'd like to buy either for a range gun, or for conceal carry. Most likely, this purchase will be a fun gun, or range gun. My current carry guns are a Gen4 Glock 17, and a S&W 642 for ankle or pocket carry. I also have a Ruger MK III 22/45 for plinking at the range. Now "that" is a fun little gun to shoot and cheap entertainment at that!

Third choice: 2" 64 RB (preferably with a factory bobbed/DAO hammer, ideally a NY-1)

The last gun "just for fun" was a Taurus Rageing Hornet.
8 rounds of a rifle bullet from a revolver just caught my eye.
They don't make them anymore but can be found from time to time on Gunbrokers.
It cost me $500 + the cost of the scope.

That's what I just did today, well yesterday now.

I came across a, Model 64-2 w/2" bbl, box, papers & original grips,
on a Michigan based forum for $380 so I took a road trip.

A little light polishing by hand with some liquid Flitz & it'll be lookin' good.

EDITED TO ADD:
Since this thread is still current, here's the M64-2 ready to join the carry stable.
The original grips are stashed away and it now wears smooth,
walnut, Altamont's with BK Grip Adapter.

Have you considered a .22? Smith makes some nice guns for range and plinking.

Glock 19 or CZ/75...

+1 on the CZ75B 9mm - never shot one but there are a ton of great reviews. Will likely be one of my next purchases.

I am partial to Ruger Revolvers. Smith & Wesson make great firearms too, I had a 5 shot 38 I bought in Texas back in the 70's and gave away. If I only had one pistol for self defense and fun shooting it would be a 357 double action revolver in stainless steel. Practice with cheap 38's and people probably won't flinch when you fire those hand pounding, flame throwing 357s. The revolver configuration depends on you, I like square butt, 3-4" barrels. CCW needs shorter, rounder config. I know lots of people like semi-automatics. I own a 22-45 that I love as a fun gun. Anyhow, my two cents.

I'm currently researching a 3rd Gen single stack 9mm, something along the lines of a 3913 or CS9. But I may just find a nice 4" 28-2 or 2" 66
