Hi,

a friend of mine has found a S&W .38 Special who belonged to his father , and since he is not a fan of weapons he would like to sell it , but he doesn't know how much it is worth .

The data found on the gun is:

Model : MOD 10-5 .38 Special CTG
Under MOD 10-5 there are other 2 numbers , "F16" and "50855"

Serial number is : 2D08787

It's all i know about it .

Can somebody tell me something more about it ?

Thanks .

Nicola.

What you have is a model 10-5, or Military and Police. It was typically the revolver issued to new police officers upon graduation from the police academy for probably 80 or so years. That -5 refers to the engineering change level, or basically reflects the order of refinements made to it over the years. The 2D0 serial prefix dates the manufacture to 1977 so it's a "late model" in this particular series. BTW, the M&P dates back to either 1899 or 1902 depending on who you are talking to.

As for value, condition is everything. If it's in untouched and unfired condition it may realize as much as 500 dollars at retail. If it has lots of heavy carry wear but still functions perfectly retail value will be in the 240 dollar range. If there are any defects in function then subtract about 100 dollars from the value. Also if it has a short barrel, a "snub nose", add about 100 dollars to the value. BTW, wholesale value will be about 40% of the retail value, so a dealer won't offer a lot for it.

As for advice, in your position I'd make a fair offer to your friend for it in a heartbeat. The model 10 is the "Definition" of a Police Revolver and is one of the finest handguns for anyone to learn how to shoot with. Plain and simple, they are fantastic handguns.

Hi!

Thanks for the reply .

Condition is not perfect . It has been used and shows signs of wear . Has lost some color on the end of the barred , and from what i can see it has not had any maintenance since it has been used for the last time .
The cylinder is a little hard to eject but i thinks it's because it lacks of lubrificant . I'll polish and oil the gun and then try to see if it works at the local shooting range .

As for the value thanks for the info .
The guy at the gun shop told him it was worth 100-150€ so we wanted to know if it was a good offer .
