Help me out, 586-1

It was hardchromed.

They hardchromed the hammer and trigger too.

It looks good.

Hardchromed finishes are great.

Maybe I'm missing something, but the only "M" that I see is the one immediately preceding the model number. The M in this case is the abbreviation for "model". If I'm correct then this 586 hasn't had the FP recall.

My vote is for an aftermarket hard chrome finish.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

This is terrible. I was thinking it had been back for a factory recall!
Now I may have to send it off. I dont want to be away from it for that long. It really is a great piece. Regardless of this finish I love it. It is likely hard chromed and I am ok with that.

I have one 586 without the modified firing pin/bushing. Works fine with all ammo I have tried so far. I have no plans to send mine in. I think there is some discussion here about what kind of primers had caused the problem the recall was designed to fix. The second pic shows where the M overstamp would have been.

never did send it in and have never had a problem with it either. I just can't stand to part with it for long. This one is a favorite of mine somewhat because it is an oddity. It is a mysterious beauty for sure and a good conversation piece.
I never got a certain answer on why it is finished like it is or even what that finish is. I like it either way.

The extractor pin on mine is finished just like the rest of the gun, "shiny".

FWIW, the factory offered matte nickle refinish in the early 90s...I had them refinish my blued model 49. I had it refinished from blue to matte nickle because it I carried it as a back up weapon and it kept getting a little rusty. The matte finish also covered up a few dings in the metal.

Since I'm guessing a refinish, I'm betting the extractor star, like the hammer and trigger is chromed.

OP?

Just to my point John. To my knowledge the factory never plated the extractor, matt nickel or not. OP mention the extractor pin is plated so…

Did the factory plate extractor and mark butt with the N?

Yes, it was your post that reminded me that a factory, or factory refinished nickel revolver will not have a nickel extractor star and got me to essentially re ask your Q.

Ha! Great minds and all that same page stuff. LOL. Until I saw the N marking on the butt I was sure it was a miss marked 686.

After a clear closeup of the S&W logo I'm in the 'refinished' camp. Nice piece regardless. As the caretaker of a non M stamped 581 and 586 4" I'd be proud to own it. I think these are the perfect all-around revolvers.

Yep nice revolver. I think it's refinished also but I would also be proud to show it off!

Cleaning day

One of my favorites, out for cleaning.
