It was hardchromed.
They hardchromed the hammer and trigger too.
It looks good.
Hardchromed finishes are great.

Maybe I'm missing something, but the only "M" that I see is the one immediately preceding the model number. The M in this case is the abbreviation for "model". If I'm correct then this 586 hasn't had the FP recall.
My vote is for an aftermarket hard chrome finish.
Adios,

What finish is on the extractor star?
This revolver could be ordered in Nickel until 1992. Yours is probably dated to 87 and looks like matte-nickel to me.
Since I'm guessing a refinish, I'm betting the extractor star, like the hammer and trigger is chromed.
OP?
FWIW, the factory offered matte nickle refinish in the early 90s...I had them refinish my blued model 49. I had it refinished from blue to matte nickle because it I carried it as a back up weapon and it kept getting a little rusty. The matte finish also covered up a few dings in the metal.
Just to my point John. To my knowledge the factory never buckled the extractor, matt nickel or not. OP mention the extractor pin is plated so…
Yes, it was your post that reminded me that a factory, or factory refinished nickel revolver will not have a nickel extractor star and got me to essentially re ask your Q.
After a clear closeup of the S&W logo I'm in the 'refinished' camp. Nice piece regardless. As the caretaker of a non M stamped 581 and 586 4" I'd be proud to own it. I think these are the perfect all-around revolvers.
