I’m trying to decide which version of the 460XVR I want to buy, and I think I’ve narrowed it down to two performance center versions: the 7.5” and the 10.5” version. I plan on using the gun both with and without a scope, which will most likely be a Leupold VX3 2.5-8x32 with QD rings for switching back and forth between irons and optics. From my research it seems that there is little to no difference in velocity when you go from 7.5” to 10.5”. To me the 7.5” looks like it would be easier to shoot off hand and it also looks a little nicer, but I’m concerned that the barrel is so short that the muzzle brake blast will screw up the objective on my scope. The 10.5” seems like it would keep the muzzle a lot further away from the scope objective... is this a valid concern? Anything else I should be considering?

You will need to determine the size wheels it will require and the tow rating of your vehicle.

Short barreled .460? Muzzle blast radius must be 15 feet.

The 7.5" is considerably easier to shoot off hand.
I have stopped using my 10.5" without support when scoped while hunting; shooting consistency for me is an issue.

With regards to velocity differences see 460 S&W: Velocity / Barrel Length

other discussions you might find relevant

460???

Scope mounting should not be an issue unless you get carried away. Depending on you arm length you will be mounting on the frame as opposed to the mount on the shroud. Even mounting on the shroud it should not be a problem.

The Model V (5") (and shorter) will present some challenges for those wanting to mount scope.

Those hand loading should be aware that some 10.5" models have been noted to have tighter throats and you definitely should work up loads and not assume any development done in other guns will be safe in your 10.5" gun.

I've read some of your posts earlier when I was doing my initial research, Ruggyh. You definitely seem to know this model revolver, so I appreciate your input. I'm leaning towards the 7.5" version, but my main concern has to do with pictures like this:

It seems to me that if I were to cut the barrel back 3", it would get dangerously close to the scope objective. Even if it didn't directly blast it, I could see the objective getting super dirty really quickly...

Or I could get really wacky and try to use something like the LaRue SPR/M4 mount:

The eye relief of the handgun scope coupled with your arm length will be the biggest factor in the location of the scope.

I do not have a picture of a 5" with scoped mounted but I have mounted them on the Model V , you are correct that the front objective is close to the comp and if mounted to far forward it could cause issue with scope. I have not tried the Scope mount type you pictured but see no physical issue using it , though get a sight picture might be an issue especially if you reach is short.

The picture below has a 5" barrel 500 JR model to give you some idea of what the mount would look like.

Mounting on a 7.5" should not present any problems
