HELP: Model 637-2 Odd Issue

Purchased an airweight today and it has these dings or divots noticeable on the cylinder that are not visible when the star is seated. What gives?

Oh, and have only experienced the trigger locking back phenomenon while dryfiring DA. Trigger will return to position after a little fidgeting or a palm rap to the cylinder.

I would break it in with 2-300 rounds after a thorough cleaning and lube. If you still have problems send it back to S&W. I do not see the "dots" as anything other than a cosmetic problem, but I might send it back just on that basis. However I am well known as very anal about my guns.........

Those marks look like something done during assembly. Nothing to worry about that I can tell.

The trigger "locking back" doesn't sound right at all. Can you give us more information on that?

On the earlier j-frames, there are itty-bitty "extractor pins" installed in the cylinder that index into corresponding itty-bitty holes in the back of the extractor star. Evidently that's been re-engineered. Is there some pins or something on the extractor that would index into the "dings"?
Regarding the trigger issues, if this gun was bought used it's possible that a previous owner installed a new lighter rebound slide spring (or cut the stock spring down) in an attempt to lighten the DA trigger pull. I generally install a 13-pounder as part of my DIY tune-up but I've seen them offered as light as 11#. The trigger on one gun I had did not return properly even with a 13# spring.

I had the same problem with my 637 2.5 inch.
I took care of it by replacing the hammer spring with a Wolff 8 lb hammer spring and the rebound spring with a wolff 13 lb. put 150 rds through it and nice and smooth.

Smith & Wesson stopped using the pins around 1994 and went to the square cut extractor star instead.

Square-cut? I disagree, look at the posted photo-- looks like angle-cut to me.

If you look at the machined area on the cylinder, it is a square. That is what prevents the extractor from turning. The small pins served the same purpose with the older guns.
