Help! New guy obsessed with getting a Shield..

I was like you too. I really wanted a Shield in 9MM cause I thought the .40 would be to snappy for me. Ended up getting the Shield in .40. I love it. It's not as snappy as you might think. It's real manageable and I'm only 5'6 and 140 lbs.

It took me 3 months to find a Shield. I finally got lucky and found one at Academy for $399 in 9mm. I wasn't really set on the caliber, just the Shield. For big box retailers like Academy, find out when their trucks come in and call the local store before they open. Academy will hold one for you until closing time, and that seems to be the only way to get one there for now.

So, I was debating the same thing you were not too long ago. 9mm or .40. I've read alot about both and was hell bent on getting a 9mm. I ended up buying a Shield .40. All I can tell you is that I love it. The recoil is not bad. I'm not going to use the word "manageable" because that would say that it has a lot of recoil. It is easy to control especially after shooting and seeing how it feels.

I'm glad that I bought the .40 but I also have a M&P 40C and had it way before the Shield. Honestly, if you can't find a Shield, stepping to the compact line is a great choice. Yes they are bigger all around but if you can't find a Shield, it's better to have a gun then not. I do not like Glocks either. The ergonomics are terrible. The M&Ps have always been my choice and will continue to be. I have had countless friends give up their ideas about owning Glocks and bought M&P Compacts.

Either way, good luck in trying to find one. I got mine through gunsamerica.com from a dealer in Maryland, I think. $450. I've seen them cheaper and more expensive but regardless the best firearm is the one that is in your hand. If you want a Shield get one, .40 is incredible and I'm sure the 9mm is terrific also. (I'm about to buy a 9mm barrel for my .40 Shield just for fun.) But I wouldn't wait to find one and in the mean time not have a solid weapon on my hip.

Good luck

I ended up getting my shield 9mm by watching this forum. One of the members posted that his local gun shop had them in stock for $425. I emailed them that night. When I woke up the next morning I had an email waiting for me from the manager saying they did have them in stock. I told him I would take one and would call when they opened with payment info and FFL to ship to. They only charged $10 shipping. I had it 5 days later. That was just last Friday. Just keep looking and follow leads on this awesome forum. You'll find one!

IMHO wait out for the gun you want/like. You said you had researched and shot both, go with what you like. Just like anything else the right gun is the right gun for you!!

Where I am there is a killer wait time and no end in sight on getting my Shield in 9mm.

Luckily for me I have a whole family of M&Ps so I will just be adding to the family.

I think the Glock is a fantastic gun, the ergonomics are just not right for me. The Shield is an obvious choice for me.

Best of luck in whatever you choose. The 9 or 40??? Well is corny, but only hits count no matter what you choose.

Looking for that "next" must have gun is half the fun!!!

Best wishes,
Scott

I have been thinking about getting a Shield 9 but lucked into finding one the other day when Bud's had them for a while in the morning. They were gone pretty fast.

I would say keep an eye on the web pages of Bud's (their "Wish List" feature didn't work for this round of Shield 9's, by the way) and other reputable internet dealers, checking back often, and avoid paying anything over MSRP -- it is not really necessary. That makes you a little more of an active participant in the hunt than going to the LGS and get on a waiting list, although that can work too.

And sometimes a notice appears on this Forum when an internet dealer, e.g., Buds, starts listing them for sale. That makes you a little more of an active participant in the hunt than going to the LGS and get on a waiting list, although that can work too.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. Still hunting, I'm in Louisville KY. I called every shop I could think of within 50 miles or so but still no luck. However at work one of my employees is a fairly avid hunter/shooter and we got to talking last night and his uncle owns a lgs outside of town. Hes going to get ahold of him today and see if there's anything he can do for me. Even if he can't it sure doesnt hurt.

Was at my LGS today and the owner took a phone call while I was there from a guy begging for a Shield. From the owner's end of the conversation it became obvious there are none to be had anytime soon. Not only Smith, but Ruger is way backlogged on orders -- as much as a year in some cases. Hot guns are in high demand, which is driving up prices big-time.

Although I'm strictly a revolver guy, if I were in the market for a semi, I'd want a Shield, too, especially after reading this review:

Bought a 40 last week... Two trips to the range, 100+ rounds through her. Wanted the 40 since I also have a Sigma 40... same ammo. I had no mag problems with 6 or 7 mags. Did notice that you need to be sure the release button is fully set when the mag is clipped in. Very manageable recoil. Also bought Crimson Trace laser guard. Very accurate from 15 yards.
LOVE IT!

Kygunco has .40 in stock right now but with nasty markup. By the time I eat my credit card fee and taxes its about $535 out the door, a bit too high in my opinion. Dammit.

OUCH !!! I'd hold out for what you really want AND a better price. I've had mine since last April. LGS called and said they had two 9's and I got one of the very first ones. It also helped having the rest of the M&P 9's in my collection.

I paid more than I would have liked for my 9mm Shield, but that was only $488 after FFL fees.

Just checked Buds and they had one in .40 for $449+tax+ I was going to pick it up there. Sold out while I was checking out....

Ran across a 9mm sitting on the table at a local gun show this morning. $449 + tax non negotiable on the price. I will be at the range in the morning!

So a bit of a thread revival, but I gave up on the Shield hunt, but stuck with an m&p. I wound up picking up a .40c at my lgs for a great price. I still haven't made it to the range yet but I love the feel of the gun. Of course a few days after I bought it my boss happened upon a shield while he was out on an ammo run. Go figure lol

I have a Shield in 40 and a Full Size in 9 Id like to add a Compact but not sure if I want it in 9 or 40. With 40 I could get a 9 barrel and have 2 guns in one. hmmmm
