Yesterday I picked up a Nice model 15-4 4inch.
The serial number is a 3 letter 4 digit format.
AHP 82**
Also on the side plate it has a number neatly stamped,
CDC 56546
I was wondering if some one could give me a idea of
the date of manufacture.
Also what the CDC number might be.
Thank You for any help you might be able to give.

Approximately 1982 according to "the book." Relative to the side plate, "? Dept. of Corrections" would be my guess.

While not an official rule, one is not permitted to tease us with a new acquisition with posting a photograph of the same. The proof is in the photo.

The Mod. 15's, like yours, generally have some of the nicest blue or nickel finishes that S&W ever produced!

The vast majority of AHP s/n's shipped in.....

April - May of 1985.

Though I've seen a few that went out as late as September of that year.

There are plentiful numbers of CDC stamped guns (model 10s and 64s mostly), from the California Department of Corrections. In a rare burst of sanity they were sold after being released from service instead of destroyed, but only outside the state. Good for collectors of LE sidearms, and of course we have all heard about all the crimes the guns have committed since their sale. (Insert crickets chirping here. :) )

These were generally stamped on the left frame under the cylinder window, so markings on the "side plate" (the removable cover on the right side) is unusual. Photos would help here.
