A friend Bought a magazine extension for auto loading shot gun. And It hangs past the barrel by about 3 inches. That's with a extended choke tube so it protrudes will pass the barrel. Is this acceptable? I think some people buy these for snow goose hunting.

I've been told that the mag extension going beyond the barrel by a couple inches is not a problem as the shot does not yet have time to expand.

Magazine extensions are regularly used in USPSA competition shotguns, and yes, they can extend well beyond the barrel length without a functional problem.

No persons shall take migratory game birds:

With a trap, snare, net, rifle, pistol, swivel gun, shotgun larger than 10 gauge, punt gun, battery gun, machinegun, fish hook, poison, drug, explosive, or stupefying substance;
With a shotgun of any description capable of holding more than three shells, unless it is plugged with a one-piece filler, incapable of removal without disassembling the gun, so its total capacity does not exceed three shells. This restriction does not apply during dates States haves selected under the Conservation Order for light geese (i.e. greater and lesser snow and Ross's geese) or those selected for the control of resident Canada geese.

That length mag extension wouldn't be acceptable for me, as I do not indulge in the 3-Gun sport, which is, basically, what they are for.

The only extension I use is for an extra 3 on an old beater Rem. 870 with an 18 1/2" barrel and a Streamlight, which is plenty for my usage (nocturnal varmint control), and even then, I remove it, and the light, when chasing cottontails and game birds. You get a much quicker swing/reaction time without all the extra forward weight. It would also be quite awkward for self-defense for the same reason.

As stated by OKFC05, more than three rounds loaded when hunting migratory waterfowl is a big no-no... that tricked-out shotgun would quickly belong to the DNR. :eek:

I've never heard of game birds being legal with extended mags.

3 gun or other competition is the only real use I know of.

I would be concerned about the mag tube being overly vulnerable to getting dropped and Tweaked.

Especially Remingtons. To my knowledge you want to have a reinforcing clamp or something to protect the extention. The screws that the extention threads onto are relatively soft metal and if they get buggered up, your shotgun will be in BAD shape.

ETA: At worst the finish will get messed up a bit with the past the muzzle arrangement. If you're really concerned about it you can tape it off or equivalent. The shot won't touch it.

Light Goose Conservation Order

The eased-up restrictions this act has provided for hunters include:

The ability to use electronic callers
The ability to use unplugged shotguns

I've seen guys use extended tubes shooting driven pheasants on private clubs. Those sometimes involve 30-40 high flying birds all at once and you can't reload fast enough. One guy used a Benelli with a tube that extended about 18" past the muzzle. I think it held 12, maybe 13, all told and it was very muzzle heavy. Said he believed in "firepower."
