For the life of me I can't find if the S&W 669 is OK to own in CA. I know it can't have more than 10 rd mags but how do I find out if it can even be in that state?

Thanks

Roster of Handguns Certified for Sale - Firearms Division - California Dept. of Justice - Office of the Attorney General

If it's not on the list, then I'm pretty sure it has to already be in the state and owned by a private citizen for another private citizen to purchase (BUT - I'm no lawyer!! Buy at your own risk!)

However, the gray area surrounding "private party transfers" from out of state is less clear. My guess is that since the gun must be "imported" through a gun dealer that they are banned under these rules. Your best bet is to check with a local gun dealer, since it will have to be transferred through a dealer for the DOJ check, anyway.

And remember - it's all in the name of SAFETY! (Ha ha ha ha ....)

What are you specifically trying to do?

If it's already in CA, no problem. If it needs to be ship to someone in CA (via an FFL), it needs to be on the list linked above. There are some exemptions like LEO and I believe family.

It can also be brought into CA by someone moving here (registration is required).

I recently relocated to California and can shed some light on this topic. I own many S&W's that are NOT on the approved California list. If you are already a resident of CA., and you now want to bring in a handgun, it must be on the CA approved list (Check DOJ Website). If it's not on the list, you cannot bring it in via FFL dealer (none will stick their neck out for you).

The only other way is if you can take "legal" delivery of a handgun (not on CA approved list) in another stated, as in y case, my orignial home town, then you, as a private citizen, already owning it, can bring it in to CA. You are however, required to "voluntarily " register the handgun in CA. I still maintain duel residency in two states.

OK thanks. I am in Ohio and my brother wants to purchase it. How can this be done?

Not sure if the brother to brother qualifies for the family transfer exemption. You can call the CA DOJ direct:

Phone: (916) 227-7527

The family exemption is only lineal up or down. The only way for you to give your brother who resides in CA a handgun that is not on the roster is have a parent of grandparent give them the handgun. If the parent or grandparent lives outside of CA, the transfer must be done through a CA FFL. Some CA FFL's are not familar with the exemption, so make sure the one you use knows what boxes to check. Make sure you brother already possesses magazines that work in the gun, or that 10 round magazines are available. You can not ship magazines with greater than 10 rounds into CA. I do not recommend calling the DOJ, as they often get things wrong, and you will still be hung out to dry even if they give you bad information. Additional info can be found on CALGUNSdotNET
