Hello, I could use help with identity and purchase decisions. I am out of town with no access to my references

First, I believe a Model of 1905, (pre-M&P?, Pre Model-10?). 38 S&W. SN:470920, all-matching. 5 screw. non-medalion grips. Finish is fairly rough, but I like it! It is listed at $275 OTD. I would have to ship it back to my home state, and he is offering it shipped for $35. I'm finding it very hard to resist. Can anyone tell me more about this beauty, it historical place, and if I am a fool for resisting?

2nd: A Regulstion Police I-Frame, 38 S&W, non-medallion grips, SN: 25448, in generally better condition, for $495, but it just doesn't intrigue me like the above. No photos, unfortunately. Any information or purchase advice I'd appreciate!

Thanks

I, on the other hand, wouldn't even have slowed down to look at it---much less pick it up.

This all comes under the heading of different strokes for different folks---and the bottom line is, "If it feels good, do it!"

The sage and seldom followed advice is keep on walking. This is a poorly cared for beater---throughout its life--as in "rode hard and put up wet". In my mind, that's spelled NEGLECT! Do you really want to spend good money for someone else's problems?

It is a .38 Military & Police model from the 1923-1927 period (likely around 1924, maybe 1925). The stocks are correct.

It should be chambered for the .38 S&W Special, not .38 S&W.

If you like it, 3 bills isn't bad.

One man's neglect is another's honest wear on a working gun. I have little interest in safe queens, prefer a gun with a story even if I don't know the story. Screw heads aren't buggered. No finish left, but no active rust or pits. Previous owner or owners didn't use the grip as a hammer. Doesn't spell neglect to me. Rode hard but no evidence of being put up wet. I would have jumped on this revolver for the price.

I am appreciative of all the responses, all valid and helpful. I suspect I'll be getting it. Therenis also a Chinese Issue K98k for $400 I may try to snag as well!

I think the Regulation Police with a 25xxx serial number deserves a second look. Would be around the same time period,,, I believe. Those I Frames don’t take up much space but they do multiply!

Agreed! SO tempting!

Hard to beat an original S&W for $310..

Robert

That is all the money and more! I am with Ralph about not buying, because you can find a half dozen 38 M&P revolvers in better condition that were recently sold on GB for way under $300 any time you search closed auctions. Remember, that serial number is how many were made just before yours, so with a half-million under S&Ws belt by the mid-1920s they do not sell for much unless pristine or a target variation. Since that revolver was built almost 40 years before the first Model 10, please do not use that term, as it is a 38 Military & Police, 4th Change revolver. The one you bought, however, will probably will shoot all day long without issue.

If you hang out here much, you will understand it is a .38 M&P, not a 1905, pre-Model 10, or Model 10. Granted it is far from being in collectible condition, but the price is not terrible for a decent M&P shooter that has not been too badly abused. The 1920s S&Ws were well made. It would make a nice project gun for a DIY refinish.

Mr. Arty, go buy the poor ole thing if the barrel and cyl. are bright.
Hell $300 is a night out with the wife. Dont expect a profit in the near future.
I'm not looking at a profit, more of a "no kill shelter" for elderly and wayward beauties like this!

Assuming it functions and doesn’t have any major mechanical defects. When a gun looks like that you have to assume it has seen some hard use…. I’ve taken too many chances on cheap guns. For not a lot more you can find something in a lot better condition.

I no longer buy well worn guns unless they are rare models. The OP probably isn't so jaundiced yet. I was once the same, buying bargain guns. If I bought the gun in the OP, I would probably do an at home refinish and carry and shoot it..

I did not believe glowe when he commented on so many $300 m&p 38s on GB, so I looked yep, lots. But with shipping and transfer fees and tax, those end up being $400 or so.

Saved me the time of typing that in.

There are currently about 2 dozen 38 S&Ws sold with shipping costs added totaling $300 or less. Took a minute to find 4, with some of historical significance.

BTW, all people who live in sales tax states have to pay sales tax, plus most will have to pay FFL fees as well.

Model 1902 - $165 plus $45 shipping
Model 1899 - $215 plus $50 shipping
Model 10-5 - $216 plus $45 shipping
Model 1905 - $235 plus $30 shipping

Thank you. That really helps. I'd love to save them all, but it just isn't prudent.
