OK, I picked up a CZ 457 varmint rifle in 22LR today. I have a 6.5 X 20 X 44 Vortex Viper scope coming. The question is whose rings, what height and should I mount a picatinny rail to the receiver and the rings to that, or just mount to the receiver

The last time I got involved with this was about 50 years ago.

Stuff has changed

Dove tail size is 11mm. CZ makes a picatinny rail as well as Area 419. The rail will possibly mount your scope higher than a dove tail ring. Ring height is determined by scope to barrel clearance or your preference. Generally closer is better but depends on where you want the lens height to be when you shoulder the rifle. Ejection port and bolt clearance are other factors. There is quite a bit of info available on a web search.

I always use talley vertically split rings on mine.I never shoot past 60 yards so i have never used a rail.If everything is cleaned to get any oil off and torqued to 18 INCH lbs they will not move.Be sure to leave enough room for a scope cover.I have a leupold 6.5x20x40 efr and medium rings and have room for bolt throw and cover.Mine likes sk lapua lubed bullets better than eley wolf.I use sk standard plus and rifle match and use bags front and rear when possible.

A couple thoughts on mounts for the CZ 457. PIC Rails with built in elevation are popular with guys doing a lot of long range shooting (150 yards or beyond) as some scopes run out of elevation adjustment when shooting the .22 lr at long range.

Personally, I don't care for the look of the pic rail, it makes access more difficult if needing to clear a malfunction, raises the scope higher than needed, and with this rifle, I don't shoot past 100 yards, as it is mainly set up for 50 yard matches.

I run 30mm Talley split rings on the rifles 11mm dovetail. Perfectly secure with no POI shift. Because of the 50mm front objective on the scope, I run medium height rings.

Nothing wrong with either way, really, more personal preference and intended use.

TIP - Both my CZ's love SK Standard Plus, and Rifle Match ammo, as in 1/3-inch groups at 50 yards, or better. Under an inch at 100 yards on a calm day. Might want to try a box.

Also, Those adjustable triggers on the 457 are pretty nice, but if you really want a light trigger, there is a replacement spring by a company called "Yo Dave" that will get you under 12 oz.

I have an Area 419 rail on one of my 457s and an EGW rail on the other. Both are excellent, the Area 419 rail has a bubble level integrated, if that's a feature that interests you.

The only drawback of a pic rail is it raises the scope height. Not an issue if you're using a high comb stock, or one with adjustable height, but it may be an issue with a lower comb. You'll have to run the numbers with your scope and the available rings to see what mounting heights you can use.

I've used these rings on two rifles now, and I've been impressed with the quality and features: [ame]https://www.amazon.com/DISCOVERYOPT-Aluminum-Picatinny-Precision-Diameter/dp/B0CMC78BLK/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=I4KU5EY609PW&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.mVyxtGW5BtNppdJOomvLwL6QSz21T9H_RToz2PIiuM4LczLspnWhGT4vPAx6B7BAEMvO_KleL69Haw4ZqPCK7FECofUuaMyoOPJipxS-nBP5e3b70nyxmmOe81kmpyqq8OWU2z-F10AZI9HpW1f6LAOmbPzhSc91jKg_u9OOqdt6YsXV5IorINUNwWCM8t9P5MHHB2Lt8kmBXcyC4OOTPeNCq3yvbKTm-RKgKu5dTlHQRx31-wUJkQbcYxric2yGZB7jMWX8JYuDtZaPu4wXTLLkKEfyrr9wA8j1Drj_ya0.3gVh6X085bMK5UZUtdUJaTHveqT6lRIDAJQbVcVTE_I&dib_tag=se&keywords=discoveryopt%2B7075%2B30mm%2Brings&qid=1743599095&s=sporting-goods&sprefix=discoveryopt%2B7075%2B30mm%2Bring%2Csporting%2C183&sr=1-1-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&th=1[/ame]

Area 419 rail and the above rings in medium height with 34mm tube 50mm objective scope on a 457 with the factory stock:

I could have used low rings (.25 inch lower), but I knew the rifle would be getting a KRG stock, so I was setting it up to be identical to our other 457. Fit, of course will be dependent on the scope used.

The other option is to use rings specifically for the 11mm dovetail. This will allow lower mounting, but most of the dovetail rings available are not very robust, and many are made for airguns. Probably OK on a rimfire, but I like my scope mounting hardware to be pretty stout.

Fishinfool posted while I was typing and brings up a good point that I forgot to mention... both of my pic rails have a 20MOA adjustment built in. If you want to shoot longer ranges this can be really helpful if your scope doesn't have a lot of built in adjustment range. With standard velocity .22, we're dialing 8-9mil for hits at 200m, so that's 25-30MOA.

I've got exactly what you need. I still have the set of rings used on my CZ457. These are BKL rings, medium height. If interested PM me. I sold that gun and scope but still have the rings.
