Where Its Hot & Muggy
Hi Everybody,

This one really caught my eye and I had to have it to add to my 629 collection. Its a 629-5, but there was no shipping label with it, so I don't know the date or the product code, and I don't see it in the SCSW. The real hook for me was the "Billboard" lettering on both sides of the barrel. I had only seen that on PC semi-autos until now.

The serial number is CMH04XX and is not stamped where its usually found (on the frame inside the crane above the model number, or on the inside of the frame bridge above the cylinder) but only on the bottom of the butt. Its a round butt frame and the grips on it now are my addition. It probably came with S&W Rosewood RB's and Hogue rubbers originally, but only had the Hogue rubbers when it came to me. I really like the look and feel with these Rosewood Round to Square conversions.

The barrel length is 5 5/8" without the ported extension (it also came with a shorter, non-ported tip) and 7 1/4" as shown. It has a wide (.500) target hammer, but a slim, smooth trigger.

Any info would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Bill

Definitely one of the coolest pc guns I've seen...
Don't remember that one, bet it shoots like a Lazar.
Have you had it out yet?

Within 1, Jim, its a dash-5  but I'm sure you're right about the original grips, and probably the product code too.

Bill

I have the identical gun in a 629-4. Jjbrewst1 is correct with the product code and serial number prefix. Mine did come with the Altamont RB grips.

I have a number of 629's and this one is spooky accurate. It shoots like a proverbial rifle and is about the best of my collection, which includes a couple of 629-3 DX's. The muzzle brake is very efficient. Do make sure the retention screw for the muzzle brake stays tight. I use Vibra-Tight on the screw threads.

Take that gun out and shoot it. If yours has the same great barrel as mine, you will be quite impressed.

Bumping old thread...i have came across a 629-4 "Comped Hunter", and can't find much about them on the web. It has been stated here and elsewhere that there were 300 produced, but the serial # of wlp624's fine looking specimen, and the fact that his is a -5 suggest a second run. But who really knows?? The label states 6 1/2" barrel but with the non-compensator attached (as pictured) it measures just over 6 1/8", and 7 1/4" w. compensator.
Can't wait to shoot this whopper!!

Beauty indeed! Congrats. I actually found a second example, as new in the original blue PC box with label, and not wanting to hoard more than my fair share 😻 I sold the one in my original post above.

Start with Lew Horton. Earl will help as much as he can.

Nice!!!. and where are the pics??

BTW, the box for the one i had purchased has no PC logo.

I think that the fact some of these COMPED HUNTERS are -4 and some are -5 is due to them being in production right at the time S&W was switching to the -5.

Two of the guns in this thread show ship dates of May 13, 1998 and June 4, 1998. They are both -4's. The earliest M629-5 I have in my s/n collection is dated May 19, 1998 it's a CLASSIC DX. After that, all my M629's are -5's, with the June 4th -4 above being the one exception.

I don't think there were two different runs of the COMPED HUNTER. I think it was just happenstance this gun was in production during a normal dash number transition.
