I recently acquired what I believe is a Pre 17 K22(no model number on gun). The serial number is K680xx. Can one of you all knowing experts tell me when this revolver was made? I am happily in awe at the knowledge shared in this forum. Thank you in advance.

I no longer trust the much publicized tables. They'll tell you 1948. It could just as easily be 1949. If its important to you there are a couple of ways to get an exact answer. You could join the SWCA, which gives you access to the members section, then ask Roy up there. Or you could send away for a factory letter (instructions up there, but open to all.

For a long while I was soured toward letters on post war guns. I still don't advocate that for most guns. The exceptions being rare configurations or engraved examples. For the $50 cost, you will get a document that often give useful information. Like learning it was sent to a gun shop in your home town (often a hardware store.)

Much depends on your reason for wanting to know. Most of us like the idea of a gun that shipped on our year of birth. Some guys even stretch it to getting one shipped the day they were born. If its a family gun, and family lore has it your relative bought it sometime in the past, you can confirm that part (or disprove it).

Thank you both for your input. I acquired this pistol in a gun trade. I like to have an idea of when all my older guns were made to make sure I don't damage them with newer ammunition. I am also a history buff and knowing the era they were made allows me to associate major events to them. For instance Dewey losing the Presidential election in this case. I also think about the craftsmen who actually took part in the design and manufacturing of the gun. Quirky? I suppose.
