Help with my new/old 66-1

Hi all, first time poster. I just traded my M&P 9c for a very nice stainless 66-1 and I have a couple of questions. I was going over the FAQ section here and cannot figure out my serial number. It is 47k42xx. I was hoping to find its age but I found nothing that starts with 47.

This was an ex-police gun if that makes any difference. It is stamped "Minn State Patrol" on the left side of the frame. Would that devalue it? It is a great shooter and in really good shape. Thanks for any help

Your gun is from 1978-9 approx.
You've not told us what you paid for your gun (I don't know auto's value) and it's condition, and if it has all accessories. I think LEO guns hold their own value amongst the LEO gun collectors. Unless you paid too much for it in the beginning, you'll be alright.
On the other hand, if you like it...........it really doesn't matter what you paid for it!

In my opinion, anytime you trade a polymer gun(S+W,Glock etc) for a 66 you did fine. Welcome!

Thanks for the quick reply! Like I said above, I traded my M&P 9c for it. I tried for a while to sell the 9mm for $450 with no success, but had a couple of offers for $400. So, if you look at it that way, I got the revolver for somewhere in between.

I had around 700 rounds of basic 9mm ammo, and we did a straight swap for my gun and ammo for the 66-1 and ammo in the pic below. The bag is about 100 or so hollowpoint reloads. Sorry, its the only pic I have currently, and my camera skills are severely lacking.

To my way of thinking you made a very good trade.
You have one of the most useful guns S&W ever made, not to mention a fine looking one too.

Welcome to the forum. I think you did fine. The 66 is a great revolver and you'll enjoy it. Some people seek out ex law enforcement guns, so that may actually add value, to the right buyer. But if it were me, I'd keep that sucker and shoot it.

I took it out today and fired about 50 rounds through it, and I LOVE IT! I just never got all warm and fuzzy with the semi, this thing rocks and I haven't even fired the +P or .357 stuff through it!

It is really a well machined piece and locks up tight. I'm in love. lol
Actually I bought my 9mm new two years ago for $439 so IMHO, I got what I paid for it in trade. I'm definitely a happy camper.

Congratulations, and welcome! A Model 66-1 is an excellent way to start collecting and shooting S&W revolvers and it looks like you have a very nice one. The Model 66 is one of the most reliable and versatile guns you could own (IMHO). Enjoy,

You did just fine! S&W isn't making any more 66-1's; S&W is making the M & P semi-auto yet, if you decide you want another.

There is something warm and fuzzy about the all-steel revolvers, in my hands at least. The nice MSP logo on the sideplate is a plus, IMO.
