hello everyone my name is Tyler and this is my first post here. I was wondering if you guys can help me out with finding a gunsmith that works on antique revolvers. I have a pair of s&w first model safety hammerless revolvers in 32 s&w that my grandfather recently passed down to me. One of them is in excellent shape cosmetically and mechanically but has a broken firing pin the other one has some cylinder play in it. I have been looking for a gunsmith to work on them for over a year without any luck any info for who works on these type of guns would be greatly appreciated. Thank you - Tyler

Welcome to the Forum. That is a question many of our members would like to have answered. Problem is that few gunsmiths are even qualified to work on the vintage top-break revolvers and the rest just don't want to. We do have a few members who do some work and will reply if they can take on any more work.

If you have the basic knowledge on how to strip down one of these revolvers, the broken firing pin can be retrieved and then you need to find a machinist to turn you a new one. Then just reassemble. The other issue of a loose cylinder lockup is a little more challenging. Parts do show up on ebay from time to time, plus you can check with Jack First and Gunpartscorp.com, but first you need to know what parts need replacing. There is a book on gunsmithing these revolvers that might be a big help. David Chicoine published a book, Gunsmithing Guns of the Old West that is a good resource. Good luck.

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass, Tyler! There is a gunsmithing company called Home - ACCURATE PLATING AND WEAPONRY. You might give Bob Cogan a call and ask if he will work on the guns for you. If both of them are antiques, it'll save you on the shipping. He does work on Colt SAA and other old guns, so I think he might want to work on yours. Keep in mind that he is not cheap.

The truly expert David Chicoine I'm sure has passed on after a long illness that unfortunately destroyed his business also. Does any one know what happened to his son? It is my understanding he helped his dad out in the business and might be well qualified to work on his own.
