Help with this Little Gun

Bought this at a southern MN gunshow today, no model number sn 85xxx nickel, serrated front ramp sight, 3 screw, square grip, pinned barrel,No model number, just got my new 4th edition standard catalog of SW out and I'm thinking its a 1955to 1956 Pre 36 model? any expert advise is appreciated of course. It had horrible packs on it that I flung

It's a .38 Chiefs Special square butt, and I think you have the year range correct. After 1957, a model 36. Hope the rubber stocks didn't hit anyone when you threw them, they are metal lined and can do some damage...

The hammer and trigger appear to be nickel plated in the photos. That would indicate a non-factory finish.

85xxx would put it in the 1956 manufacturing period, and it also was likely to have shipped in 1956. It would be a pre-Model 36 CS, but with a square butt, which is more desirable. I won't comment on the finish originality from those pictures as they are not too good.
