Hey all my wife is signed up for carry class 1 st of month. She is a brand new shooter.Only thing she will shoot is .22. Only in revolver. I tried a .380 , .32 . no good. Any body got an idea on a good .22 revolver for carry. Please dont make it into a caliber war. It is what it is here. So posting other calibers or semis wont work. Thanks

All four of my semi-auto 22's are picky. I would feel much better armed for self defense with a nine shot revolver.

The problem with 22 revolvers is the triggers have to be heavy to ignite the rimfire bullet, even on a new gun like the LCR.

Personally, I think I'd go for a Beretta 21A Bobcat. I might try to talk her into a .25 version because it's rimless, but really there's not much difference ballistically between them.

Try the LCRX 22LR by Ruger...the one with an exposed hammer... My sister-in-law has one and likes it. The ability to cock the hammer allows for a much better trigger pull, especially in rimfire weapons.

Smith and Wesson M&P22. Don't scrimp on the ammo, either--CCI Standard for practice, and one of their hotter offerings for carry.

As for .22s being picky, well...my old Ruger Mk III match pistol went for 2500 rounds without a stoppage, ammo or otherwise. My 1911-22, a Franken-gun built from a Caspian frame and a conversion upper, has been averaging one stoppage in every 500 or 600 rounds. But then again, I generally don't clean it more often than every 500 or 600 rounds, either.

I'm not super-fond of .22 rimfire revolvers for this sort of thing. I think that they're more prone to misfires, for various reasons related to the chambers.

No caliber war but what she needs is some training. 38sp wc in a steel snub is just about like a 22lr in an alloy gun. Even if one could make an argument for the 22lr, I just dont trust the ammo. Rimfire has never been ultimately reliable.

I have a 63 with a 3" barrel. It had a decent trigger right out of the box. The 63 mimics my 3" 60 perfectly, making it cheap training for my carry gun. It's a good little shooter - no problems or issues. Besides, it's a hoot to shoot!

Perhaps you can find a friend with a 63 for her to try or a range that rents it.

I'm also a woman who prefers revolvers, so I totally understand your wife's preference. She should carry & shoot what she is comfortable with. If that's a 22 revolver, than that's great. When she's ready, she might choose a larger caliber, like a 60 with light 38 loads - or not, and that's ok too. She should be congratulated for making the decision to carry!

I would get a .22 revolver that holds 8 to 10 shots. I have a couple of High Standards that hold 9 shots. I'm keeping them for when my arthritis gets too where recoil bothers my hands. Larry

Buy her a J frame Smith.

I agree with wheelgunmagic, when she is ready, she'll move up in caliber if she wants.

No calibers other than .22. No semi-autos, just revolvers. OK, here are
a few that have not been mentioned.

Taurus model 94. 9 shot cylinder. I know many complain about Taurus,
and I do too about their semi-autos, but I used a model 94 to train a lot
of beginners. Most of them liked it. Some complain about the stiff
trigger pull, but that is part of the deal with all .22 revolvers.

H&R 922. Also a 9 shot cylinder. I used one for training before I got
the Taurus 94. 622 is the six shot cylinder.

High Standard Sentinel. Chic Gaylord liked this model. I do too.

Charter Pathfinder.

Iver Johnson Bulldog.


Any of the above would cost a lot less than a Ruger or S&W to start
with, and after a while she might start thinking a Lady Smith or LCR
in .38 Spl.

Thanks to all. The Ruger sounds like a good fit . I belive Charter makes ultra .22 also. Where not in huge hurry. Shes using a Tauraus .22 light weight to practic with. ( I won it at a gun shop raffle years ago its been solid plinker ). She shot the 442 one time and put it down. Shot a keltec .380 same thing one shot and no. I still want to try her with the Keltec.32. But dont hold alot hope . She is very skirmish of the semis I put in front of her not going to force.She didnt even get into 9mm at this point . So a .22 wheel will be her 1st carry.Will keep working too.Any other lighter.22 carry folks out there

I have to agree on the current 3", 8 shot Model 63.

While I have only shot three examples of this model, all of them had out of the box Double Action triggers that were far superior than what we are used too from little rim-fire J-frames

The nice thing about the LCR is that if she decides to move up in caliber, she can go with the same gun.

I would also recommend either the S&W 63 or Ruger LCR. Have her try both at the store (with snap caps) and let her decide.

When it comes to pistols, the beauty of the Beretta Bobcat is the tip up barrel. She will never need to rack the slide.

Then there is the S&W Model 43C. I really like those 22s. My FFL is holding one for me.
