Helped a widow with some guns

A young engineer at work heard that I had an interest in S&W revolvers and told me he was helping his widowed mother-in-law liquidate some guns that her late husband had. He's a shooter himself, but doesn't have an interest in 'old guy' guns, which he and his group consider revolvers to be….okay by me! I know they had been horribly low-balled on some gun store offers and didn't want to drag out individual sales, so I made a fair offer on the group (I think it was fair) and they accepted it. I'll take better pictures when I'm not so busy, but here's the group:

Model 60-3
Model 19-5
Model 686-4 (7 cylinder version)
Model 629-4 Classic



All pre-lock, no condition issues and I don't anticipate any firing concerns. Frankly I have versions of these models already, so this will likely be viewed as an investment. I paid too much for the Model 60 & 19, but made a little on the 629 & 686, so it equals out. By the way, one of the gun shops offered $400 bucks for the lot of them! Rest assured I did the lady much better than that, she's happy with our deal. I could individually sell to private buyers and make a profit, but for now they'll go in the safe.

Oh yeah, my son spied the 629 and has been reminding me ever since that he has a birthday coming in June, imagine that?

I don't think that you can pay too much for a S&W 4" Model 19. When you are shooting it you can hear the angels sing.

I agree wholeheartedly. The sad fact is it happens more often than we'd like to admit; grandma, mom comes into a shop with "Papa's" gun, that she was always afraid of and is given a ridiculously low offer, which the lady will often take, no questions asked. Yes I'm aware that a shop needs to make a profit, even a healthy one, but it doesn't excuse scamming someone unknowingly. It sort of reminds me of the times I read in the local paper of elderly folk being taken by con artists by any number of manufactured calamities; roof damage, leaking gas in the neighborhood, car is smoking badly, need to inspect their water pipes, etc. In this case, the lady was wise to let the son-in-law handle matters, although I'm still questioning his sense of taste by calling this group of beauties, 'old guy guns'!

HONESTY CHECK

I recently took 2 highly customized sigs, a 220 and a 239 that
had matching nickel plating, internal lasers, adj fiber optic sights, trigger/action jobs, to a pawn shop. told them I was selling them for a widow. the guy behind the counter calls his boss over who takes the guns in the back, I thought he was gonna try and steal the lasers (I played dumb about the modifications). he comes back and offers 600$ for both. I asked him if he would really do that to a widow and that the lasers alone were worth that, then stripped them to make sure they were still there. I then told him I knew exactly how much they were worth and this was just an honesty test for future buissness and you failed. one clerk lowered his head in shame while the owner started to talk of overhead. I interupted him and said I could understand 200% as "reasonable" but what they tried was pure greed and taking advantage of someone elses misfortune and I would NEVER do buissness with them and tell everyone I knew about their tactics. the store was Crowders hardware and pawn in Spring Hill Fl.

That was my first response when he said $400 dollars, I asked if it was each and he said no, no, no, $400 for all 4 guns... it's just not right how I was raised. One of the things I've enjoyed over the years on this S&W forum and another like it, is the integrity of the members that bristle at seeing folks taken for what they have.

When I die, my guns and other items of value will be lined out for disposition (they are today), but I hope I'm remembered not for being a guy with a lot of guns, but a man that was honest and had some integrity.
