That's one nice-looking 1917. I would think that Para could override the software and make this guy a Member right now. Same goes for bigjack59.

Good for you! A nice ol' 1917. I've had several and they were always nice shooting guns. I'd even be pleased with a good shootin' nickeled-over '17.
Hi All, This is a bit off thread. I, too, have an S&W M1917. I sent for a letter and Mr. J replied that my pistol with sn 1493xx was shipped to the US Govt Eastern Depot on Jan 16, 1918. Another thread asked about S&W Letter mistakes (mostly typos, I'm sure) but info on my revolver's mfr date indicates 1918. So my question to you guys, without bothering Roy Jinks: is this serial number compatible with the Jan 1918 ship date? I'm thinking that the letter should have read shipped in Jan 1919. Right? Thanks In Advance! Ray

Ray, you may be right. I had one with a s/n of 153XXX that lettered to being shipped in 1919. You might want to drop him a line and ask that he confirm the ship date.

Why would you think that? The War ended in Nov, 1918, and the Gov't had little interest in continuing to receive a NON-standard issue fill-in gun. It is my understanding that the contract was cancelled when the War ended.
Don't count on S&W serial numbers shipping in numerical order.

The Government did continue to accept both Colt and S&W Model of 1917 revolvers after the armistice was signed. I do not have my references here but will look to find reason for the continued delieveries.

An excellent point.
Obviously there were plenty of frames (and guns) left, as we see .44 HE 2nd Models with the old WW I proofmarks.
Since the U. S. Government had stepped in and was running Smith & Wesson during the war, they were in an excellent position to cut off shipments at their discretion.

Yeah, make me a member! This S&W thing is taking over my collecting. I have a old five screw .38, an older hand ejector .32 (just starting to research those two), and my personal fav this 1917. The 1917 just screams fun. It is a blast to shoot, and relly looks great in an off beat way. The next step is Ivory grips to complete the old school George Patton look. Rmember they will be faux ivory not "pearl" because we all know what George said about pearl handled revolvers!

You are correct, and I stand corrected.
Charlie Pate covers it well, on Pages 71-75.
There were obviously many in progress, and it took a while to complete them.
Operations continued by the Gov't till Jan 15,1919.
Control of the "Requisitioned" plant was returned to S&W Jan 31, 1919.
