I believe that three or four weeks ago, when Obama first announced that he was setting up the Biden task force, the intent was to come up with much more onerous EOs than what he announced today. Frankly, there are a whole lot of things he could have done unilaterally that are a whole lot worse than this fluffy little list. He could have used the discretionary authority granted to certain regulatory agencies to do things like immediately stopping imports of certain items, for instance. Bush did it and Clinton did it.

Why did he not do the things we feared?

How about the fact that NRA has signed up a quarter of a million new members in a month? How about the fact that gun stores everywhere have sold out of just about everything? Gun owners and buyers have been voting with their feet and their pocketbooks. I believe he was unwilling to squander a lot of political capital on an issue he suddenly discovered was a whole lot more divisive than he thought. I just bet he will get a lot of pleas from congress critters . . . "don't make us walk the plank on this like Clinton did in '94 . . ." I believe he thought he could vilify us to the point that NRA would lose clout . . . . look what happened instead.

The Ulsterman Report says an insider said that Obama was "livid" over the backlash. He says that Obama met with Harry Reid last night and Reid told him to basically forget it, that the NRA was ready to go to war with the White House. So, Obama backed off and kicked the can to Congress.

Frankly, if I were a Bradyite or a left wing Socialist, I would be highly peed off at my president right now. I would be questioning why he "caved to the e-vile gun lobby," meaning the NRA.

redlevel,

All those RUGER.com notifications keep flowing to Representatives from State Houses to Obama himself, and the numbers keep climbing.

The NRA and other Firearms people are doing notifications also, keep the HEAT UP, and the LIGHT SHINING on your REPRESENTATIVES.

2014 we'll VOTING AGAIN too.

Keep writing!!!
Post cards now as previously posted on another thread to add to all of the internet letters, It will inundate, and help the postal service

When this debate moved to the issue of them losing seats b/c of the actions they could take, and the actions taken in the past it only shows that they are not in this to try and curb any gun violence or save any lives. They are just doing it to push an agenda but as soon as that costs them votes they back down.

If someone believed so strongly in something they would vote for it regardless of the political implications but they only care about keeping their seats.

How many new NRA members since this started?

I read that enough guns have been sold/ordered this month to outfit the entire Chinese or Indian Armies with brand new weapons.

How many letters, post cards, faxes, emails and phone calls have been made? I read that they were running 90% against additional gun control

How many discussion boards like this are heating up with people venting and driving the moderators crazy trying to keep the conversation civil?

400 million plus guns are running around the USA with the vast majority belonging to fine upstanding citizens who despite being armed to the teeth wield with purpose the greatest weapon of all.....a vote.

The President came to power with a fractured opposition party struggling to find its voice. This issue has given a voice to that opposition and the near unanimous unity that is on display across the country has given pause to the "this one feels different" crowd who seeks to make political every facet of our life.

I believe that WE caused enough noise to be heard. We have to keep it up and make sure our local political hacks understand that we may be armed but it is our vote that they should look for, not the gun.

Yoy nailed it sir. Glad I am not the only one who feels this way. We have scored a victory in the first round, but we need to remain vigilant and keep up the pressure. Thanks to all of you who have been working to promote and/or preserve our rights.

Obama seems to have uncharacteristically backed down this time. I'm somewhat relieved, but I'm also a bit skeptical. It's good to see that the combined realities of panic buying (people voting with their wallets); the storms of e-mails, letters and phone calls; the NRA's responses; and the reactions from some of our more honorable politicians can actually penetrated the thick skulls that reside in the White House. However, a couple of things:

We've done nothing (and are doing nothing) to prevent a re-occurrence of the tragic event. Nothing in what is being proposed gives the schools the tools they need to address (put down) another lunatic loaded with a weapon and ill-intentions that gains access to kids or other innocents.

It's likely that another event, similar to Sandy Hook, Va-Tech, or Aurora will happen again. There's just too many crazy people out there looking for 15 minutes of fame. When (...not if) that happens, all of the hype and misinformation recently spewed by the MSM will seem like enlightened prose. We will be vilified and portrayed as mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging, gun-clinging cretins. And The Great Wise One, having previously succumbed to intense pressures wrought by the money-hungry military and industrial complex (and the NRA), will have no other choice but to "do what should have done the first time".

My point? Let's not go high-fiving ourselves and break out the champagne over this temporary victory. I fear that there is some political ju-jitsu going on here, and despite having thick skulls, the President and his handlers are not dumb or desperate. Let's be vigilant and continue to do the right thing(s) with calm, intelligent resolve. We must continue to stand together, especially when the next wave hits.

Anyways, that's my $0.02. -S2

Absolutely right on. This is only the first salvo and Speedo is exactly correct. Now is the time to be very cautiousa and check our 6. This is uncharacteristically mild and scary in its lack of teeth. I do believe that if we relax we will get bit....

We need to mop the floor in 2014 with anyone that was even thinking about embracing this draconian garbage. It will soon be time to clean house again (like in 94).

Right on. We need to keep up the fight.

If another tragedy occurs, obama will get to explain why he didn't push for armed guards in schools like the NRA petitioned for. That is the one thing that stands a chance of making an immediate difference. He also bowed to his buddies in the entertainment industry and did nothing to control the violent trash many kids are exposed to. He did nothing to hold "mental health professionals" to the fire for all the prescribed psycho drugs that have historically been involved in these tragic events. Someone is prescribing the stuff. Who the hell is overseeing the people on it?

That was a very good post Speedo.

I do agree that they are going to have to accelerate the protection and get something that works short term, while they work out something better long term. I could think of some perpetrators that would do something like this now seeing what happens. But as the others, they too would be the lowest form of murderous cowards.

But I have not made any mistake about this. I said just a day or two after this happened that the Dems, the libs, and the antis would be making this push, along with O of course, although I thought even more. And that they would try to set it up as THE mid term election issue to try to take the House. I still beleive that is what they intend to do.

So while we can breathe a little easier, we are going to have to be working hard and stay alert or we will be in a much worse mess in a year or two.

speedo2 very well put!

We need to "stay the course" keep the pressure on If you do not receive a response in a timely manner write again and again!!
besides E mails try the old fashioned way with a stamp.

My wife a conservative liberal, just asked for me to sign her up for the NRA and she informed she would like to take a ccw class
Woo Hoo

When will the time be right for the public to start putting pressure to have the "gun free zones" lifted?? Would Ruger be willing to set up a Ruger.com notification for this cause. We need to keep going and not let the momentum up!

Every president loses some amount of support as soon as he wins a second term. Since he is very much a "lame duck" on January 20th, he will not likely get any further support than what got him elected in November. His financial agenda will likely have to be re-thought. The people that forced the 2nd Amendment issue, will likely be the same ones who will stand against the president when it comes to things like the debt ceiling.

There is also the fact that the mid-term elections almost always run against the incumbent political party. The current incumbents know this, and will do most anything in order to stay in office. Their offices depend entirely on the good graces of their electorate, as opposed to the president who needs only a majority of electoral votes.

In the next eighteen months most representatives and senators will distance themselves from Obama. It won't be anything as overtly as telling him to "bag his ***, but the coolness of the political atmosphere will require sweaters and coats.

Obama won, despite the fact that many of his supporters stayed home. Romney lost because a lot of Republican voters from 2008 also stayed home. The RNC will need to do some soul searching, and find out why real conservatives stayed out of the fray.

So, stand by, political junkies. It's gonna get interesting.

Congress deff needs a cleansing along with many other levels of government. Not that I give other administrations a free pass but this one seems so much more corrupt an hell bent on destroying the constitution.
