You seem to be pretty up on older movies. Maybe you can come up with a theory for this.

This says it's The Voice From Beyond.

Before downloading it (everything on the site is in the public domain), I wanted to see what it was about. I looked it up on IMDB. No such movie. I googled the title. The only hit was that page.

I did a search on William Powell, Jean Arthur, Kay Francis and Eugene Pallette in the same movie. Got one hit. The Canary Murder Case. And how 'bout that? Canary Murder was made in 1929.

I start watching the movie, on that site, and about 0:10, just for a second or two, you can see CANARY in the title. Then there is a different title, in a different font, placed over it, saying THE VOICE FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE.

Any thoughts on WHY it might be renamed?

Sometimes when a movie becomes public domain, they like to rename them and I dont know why. A few good examples are some of John Waynes B Westerns. Here is a good example of one of my favorites. The Last Outpost w/ Ronald Reagan, Bruce Bennett and Noah Beery Jr. This was renamed to the austentious title of: Cavalry Charge. :(:confused::rolleyes:

BTW, this movie also starred Beaver Cleavers daddy--Hugh Beaumont as a Confederate Cavalry Lieutenant--who was commanded by Captain Reagan.

I think they also do the name change--partly because every other public domaine dvd "puppy mill" had it released under the original title. So I guess its a trick to see more copies of the same movie?

Anotyher possibility is that if released under a new name by some company--maybe its a cleaner print as most PD movies are never cleaned up and restored and the other dvd companies cant steal their better version to copy..

Okay, that makes sense.

I've got a John Wayne movie - Rodeo Racketeers. They took The Man from Utah, colorized it, cut it from 52 minutes to 20, and sold it under the new name, and nicked me for another five bucks. Worthless scumsuckers.

Thats a new renamed title for me. What DvD mill is selling this one? I need to add another to the list of where not to buy.
 
I throw out the hard cases - keep 'em in sleeves in a 3-ring binder. Take up less room that way.

BUT - the disk says STERLING, over 40319, over a US flag, over MADE IN USA.

Then down at the bottom it says, YOUNG DUKE SERIES, C1995 NELVANA TECH, INC

Maybe some of that will give you the info you need.
 
As soon as I saw your question, the 1929 date rang a bell. That was the dawn of the sound era in Hollywood. Sure enough, an IMDB search found this quote at The Canary Murder Case (1929) - IMDb

'A famous "transition" film. One shot as a silent and partly re-shot for talkies. William Powell stars as Philo Vance. Jean Arthur plays a show girl. Louise Brooks is the "Canary." Of course this film is famous because Brooks refused to return from Europe to re-shoot scenes as a talkie. The studio then released news her voice would not record well. To get even more even they hired Margaret Livingston to dub Brooks' voice in a high nasal New York accent. Livingston also appears in a few long shots in a Louise Brooks hair cut.'

They must be th new kid on the block? Ive never run into any of their products before.

I have a few of those types as well.Whats funny, is a German literal translation for a title. Gunsmoke can be: Smoking Colts to Smoke from the pistol.:rolleyes:
 
Not unknown for a re-release of a movie to be re-titled for some reason or other. The WWII feature film "The North Star" about the German attack on the Soviet Union was later re-released with the title "Armored Attack." Maybe it sounded more war-like, but it was mainly a pro-Soviet propaganda film. Made in the era when the USA and the Russians were allies, and shows it.

I remember that movie, Dana Andrews was in it. The Germans were stealing blood from Russian children amongst other highlights.

A movie can bomb if it has a weak title. Sometimes they rename and re-release it.

I had some trouble finding a Japanese movie called here, "Zero" which was a pretty faithful story about the plane and the people that flew them from beginning to end. I had been released under several names.
 
Formula 51 when originally released in Canada was The 51st State. Many older TV shows were renamed when they went into syndication such as Gunsmoke renamed Marshall Dillon and Dragnet was renamed using Friday's badge number.

That remindsd me of another--but more newer movie title change. Anyone here ever watch: Ffolkes w/ Roger Moore and David Hedison? They renamed it to: North Sea Hijack. :rolleyes:
 
I saw a movie.....

Way back in 1974 I saw a movie called Silent Night, Evil Night that was a decent scare movie about a killer living in the attic of a sorority house over Christmas break. I had trouble finding it. It was also called in the US 'Black Christmas' and
'Stranger in the House'.
