About 10 years ago, I bought a Model 686-6 for my son, used but in superb condition. It's a snubbie, but my son always shot it like it had at least a 6" tube. I've only completely disassembled the gun once, but for the life of me, I can't remember what it took to remove that Hogue grip. My son unwisely stored this gun in his attic to keep it out of reach of children before he bought a proper safe. When he retrieved it, the rear sight, hammer and trigger were all covered with rust, and the stainless frame even showed signs of rusting as well.

I've repaired all the rust damage to the exterior, but I need to remove the sideplate, but can't do that until I can get that Hogue grip off. And I don't remember how I did it before!!!

Can anyone help?

BTW, I'm extremely familiar with the guts of a a modern S&W revolver. I keep Jerry Kuhnausen's bench manual within reach at all times.

Any help on the Hogue grip removal would be deeply appreciated. I have a set of Zebrawood two-piece grips from Herrett which also sport finger grooves, but the boy isn't interested. I'll keep them in reserve for my old Model 57.

If the grip is the Hogue rubber "Bantam" type grip, it snaps together on the frame.
It's removed by prying the two halves apart.
