So after much research on home defense for my bachelor cave I decided on the S&W Governor. Put in a "buy order" with my LGS. Of course it may be years before one is available....

So yesterday I'm in the local hardware store which is next to a trading post and the proximity triggers my aging memory that the trading post carries a few guns. I go in and amazed to find 9mm ammo too. Bought a bunch of that precious stuff. Then found myself looking at BOTH a Taurus Judge and a Taurus Public Defender...there, in front of me...for sale...new....

Amazed they're even there and for sale in this insane firearms market...and was most tempted to grab one of them...but after sad adventures with "inferior" weaponry that needed upgrades from a couple other gunmakers I decided to hold off for the Governor....part of me says that's insane...won't see a Governor for sale for a long long long time...take the Judge so I have "something" for a .410/.45 load....buy it while its there!

Another part of me says I can do okay with the 9mms I have if something goes down...wait for the Governor to be back on the market...

Still...tempted to go back and buy the Judge tomorrow...bird in the hand...maybe this one will work...

Oh the frazzled mind of an gun addicted olde geezer....already have both a Sig Sauer P226 Tac Ops on order and I'm craving getting a better look at the Springfield EMP....

Maybe I should take the gun money and buy some therapy time with it...feel soooo addicted...

Having owned a Judge until a year or so ago...I would say continue to hold out for the Gov. Browse the internet sales pages - they are out there. Get on a notify list from Top Gun Supply or Bud's. One of the biggest benefits of the Gov is .45 ACP.

Hold out for the Gov, you will be much happier and honestly it should not take all that long. Revolvers are not part of the current craze. They are on Gunbroker if you don't want to wait, although I do understand loyalty to your local shop.

Not one store out of about 5 that I visited had a Governor in stock. Finally found one on Gunbrokers and won the auction for $650 shipped. Think I got just a tad lucky as most seem to be selling for about $675.

Just ordered the Desantis 2 position holster today. 2 week back order as I needed a left handed holster. Optics Planet has good prices on the lefties if anyone is interested.

I was in a LGS after lunch today. They had a couple non-Crimson Trace model Governors in their case - lightly used $539 - Brand new $639. I bought mine there 6/11 for $569 new. I still consider it a bargain!

Riverkilt,

Hold out for the Gov. Just breathe deeply and focus your obsession on something else. I did a Buy Now for $550 on Gunbroker back in March 2011. My LGS at the time was around $600. Prices are climbing, but not as fast as the semi-autos.

I just bought one, I like it because it take 45acp over the judge.

Well damn, I'm weak...Last Saturday I was in a local trading post for something else and found out they sold ammo....not only that they had some 9mm ammo. AND...they had a Judge and a Public Defender for sale - new. I managed to hold out until Monday when I broke down and bought the Public Defender...yeah...I'm weak. Winning argument in my head was that who knows how long until distributors have any Governors again? Could be years.... Took the new PD to the range today for five .410 shots. All the ammo I was willing to use since only had a few boxes. Kept the personal defence .410s and used some birdshot for target practice and to get the feel of the new gun. Kick is about the same as my S&W 642's with .38 special. Can really feel how that Ribber grip works to help take away the recoil impact on an olde geezer like me. Woulda bought a Governor in a heartbeat but I was too late to the run on guns...so, feel better that I have something. I do really like the feel of the Public Defender and how in single shot mode it just seems to hold steady in my hand. Used a large cardboard box target. Pattern at 15 feet was about a 15 inch diameter circle. Lesser circles as I moved it closer. And at 5 feet it was a big one inch hole. Most reassuring though not sure birdshot would do that to meat.

My local store has a Governor for sale for a few months now and nobody wants it. I keep thinking I should buy it "just because" but I still can't bring myself to do it.

Does anybody know if moonclipped .45 Colt will fit into the cylinder?

The governor requires moon lips for 45 acp not 45 colt. I bought mine this fall. Love to shoot it. The s&w quality is apparent. 45 colt are readily available as well. Acp not so much.

They are selling like hot cakes in this area. We have .45 Colt and .45 ACP ammo available as well. I don't load for .45 Colt so rarely shoot it in mine. I have other .45 ACPs so that's my favorite. Very accurate. I wish my Night Guard had the Governor sights.

your Gonna Luv the Governor!

If nothing else, you'll be able to shoot .45 ACP. Go to You Tube and watch the videos on the Governor, it will help you make up your mind

Update: So a couple weeks ago I was in a Flagstaff gun shop and they had a Governor...Dang!! Didn't buy it...but the thought of it being there...what I wanted in the first place....ate away at my brain for a couple weeks. Today I drove the 320 mile round trip across the rez and bought it! So now I have a Public Defender AND a Judge....Governor for the bedroom, PD for the computer room. Hope to get the Governor to the range tomorrow...reading up on it tonight.

Well, good morning to you too.....

When my butt is on the line prefer to be pragmatic...small maneuverable six shot "shotgun" over a "pretty" handgun...

When ugly is smashing in my door wanna protect myself with ugly...

Touchy, aren't we? Sorry if you were offended.

Just back from the range to compare the Governor with the Public Defender.

Pattern for both firing Winchester PDX1 .410 self-defense shells from 12 feet was an 8" diameter pattern of the 12 BBs for both guns. The Governor put the personal defense disc thingies dead center of the circle. The Taurus put them about 4" off center at 10 o-clock but within the circle.

Surprisingly, the Governor - the bigger gun - had more of a recoil than the smaller Public Defender. Would attribute that to the Taurus' "Ribber" grips.

It was difficult to load and extract other .410 range rounds...but could force them in and force them out...not sure why...would take a long time to reload either gun.

At least you finally acquired a Governor and having the Taurus as a backup isn't so bad. The Governor is definately the superior of the two and the more you shoot it the happier you'll be that you have one at last.
