Holographic Sight/Scopes

I need opinions on the Sightmark Ultra Shot Holographic Sight SM13005 (link below) for a .22 plinking rifle - I've tried a standard 4X scope and am having problems finding the target (new with scopes), bad eyes and trifocals. I thought maybe an open holographic sight would be best for me, without spending more that I can afford. Your thoughts please. Thanks.

No experience with that specific sight but I have used both the Burris FastFire and the Ultradot L/T in the past. Either worked quite well on a .22 rifle within their limits. Both had a fixed dot size (4 MOA) and automatically adjusted the dot intensity. At times that dot would actually be larger than what I was shooting at, like when defending the range against old shotshell hulls. I still use a red dot sight but now prefer the ones that let me select the dot size (from 1 or 2 to 10 MOA) and manually adjust the dot intensity. Currently using a Nikon Monarch VSD but it's more in the $225 range. Have it on a Ruger Mark lll and love it. My CZ 452 American though has a more traditional Weaver T-10 scope. Red dots and older eyes are just made for each other... one of the main reasons I use one on the pistol.

If you have astigmatism (you mention bad eyes), then the recticle will possibly be too blurry for you to use with ease. I had that problem with my Eotech and ended up trading it away.

No astigmatism, just old, and can use all the help they can get. I have a regular red dot on my Buckmark, and have no problem with it. The holographic sight in question has a choice of three or four reticles & dots, but I do like the smallest dot possible for distance shooting.

For my eyes, troubled as they are with some astigmatism but not bad. The EOTech works fine, my favorite is the
Aimpoint Micro H-1, sorry to say both are expensive. You might consider the UltraDot Matchdot

I've used Bushnell Holosights for about ten years with stunning (IMHO) results. One never moves from the top of my 6" M29-5. Lots of memories in the deer woods with this awesome revolver! The other is currently on my AR-15, though I plan on getting an EOTech Holosight soon and put this one back on my Ruger MkII.

I don't know about this new sight, but I've gotten to where I like 'em deer hunting better than scopes here in the deep Georgia woods!

. . . Then there was the time I beat most of the field of about 35 riflemen, in a 100 meter .22LR silhouette match against their scoped .22 rifles . . . with my Ruger MkII Target Pistol w/ a Holosight on top!

. . . and that time amazing some buddies by hitting a milk jug at 200 yards with my Model 29 w/ Holosight. No problem . . . just put the dot 34" high and let the bullet arc into the target!

. . . and the TWO times in the woods when I've dropped THREE deer in mere seconds with the M29. No, deer don't stand around either when the first round goes off. The last one once dropped like a stone, from a full run broadside, at a measured SIXTY-FIVE yards.

. . . or the time a buck bolted in front of me and I instinctively swung the dot on .44 Smith and dropped him on a full run . . . with a perfect heart shot . . . at 35 yards in the planted pines. I'm no wild shot either. I will NEVER take a shot I am not confident of making, and I've not lost a deer with the Holosight in ten years!


In REAL WORLD use . . . the Holosights are awesome.

On the range, they will "give you your eyes back" too . . . allowing you to shoot sub 1/2" benched groups with a .22 pistol at 25 yards.


When you try one you'll probably kick yourself and yell, "Why did I wait so long!"

I also suffer from 68 yr old eye's. I use a red dot on all my target handguns. I have Tasco PDP 2's and Millet red dots. They work fine indoors, but are sometimes not bright enough outdoors in bright sun.

For rifles, shooting anything over 25 yards, I use a scope. The more magnification the better, and a better quality scope has clearer brighter images. I favor Nikon, Leupold, and Unertle. Quality glass with easy focus feature like on the Nikon Monarch give me no problems.

There are also some scopes out there that have the magnification, and have lighted cross-hairs either red or green. I can't think of the brand name at this time but a little searching on the internet should find them

My 512 is my favorite,unfortunately too heavy for a handgun, your next purchase will be the 3X magnifier w/flip mount.

Take a look at the 7moa docter sight.
Including mount for s&w k/l/n revolvers it weighs less than 1.5 ounces.
