Maybe a dumb question, but what is the difference between a "melt in" and a regular optic cut?

He/She (them, they?) are asking who can machine a 2.0 slide to accept an RDS rather than use a dovetail mounted base.

In the context of your question, none.

Bear in mind that cuts are specific to the RDS used.

Oh gotcha. Thought there was some new technique out there I hadn't heard of. In that case there are literally dozens of shops that will do the cut. ATEI, Primary Arms, L&M Precision were probably the first few to start doing them. It depends on which M&P you have though, as the ones with the LCI on top of the slide can be a problem.

Although I see nothing on the website that claims they cut a slide differently than with an end mill, could they maybe use a laser instead, thus the “melt” terminology? Eh. End result is the same.

Groo here
When talking about melting , on a gun it usually means that the ruff or sharp edges are buffed off.
When talking about a red dot mount, it usually means to mill the
slide for the sight and to do it so deeply that the normal sights can be used if the battery quits.
As apposed to "cutting" the slide to accept the red dot and needing taller fixed sights.
But each shop has their own ideas...

My understanding is that a melt in has a radius cut at the front instead of a straight across cut which is supposed to hold the optic better.
