I just purchased my M&P 22 pistol and need a holster so I can carry it along during our hiking/plinking expeditions. I'm not too concerned with quick deployment of the gun but instead need something that will secure it comfortably to me while I walk and while I'm shooting my 15-22 rifle. Thought maybe someone has found a good product that works good for this particular gun. Thanks!

I use the Blackhawk Model #28 Askins Compact Concealment holster for all of my M&P's. I works great for concealed carry and is very convenient for open carry also. It keeps the pistol high and close to the body; out of the way while you are active. It has an adjustable retention screw, so you can crank in the amount of resistance required for the activity you are involved in. It's my favorite holster, followed by the Blackhawk Cover Six model.

I guess you could say I was hung up on Blackhawk holsters. I used to carry pistols exclusively in thumb break holsters and never got into any of the kydex/serpa types. A comment by Sheriff Jim Wilson, in Shooting Times magazine, stating that thumb breaks were just one more thing to think about in a high pressure, life and death situation. That put an end to my thumb break holsters. I now have a box full of them in my closet, that I never use!

The Serpa's have a release button that will leave your finger close to the trigger when you pull it out. Some don't like that.

An alternative is the Uncle Mike's Reflex holster for the fullsize 9 and 40. I can confirm they work perfectly for the .22. I really like those holsters, they come with belt and paddle adapters and you can adjust the angle and height. You disengage the 'lock' by torquing the grip towards your body.

Yes, some don't. If you use the button properly, your finger will not fall into the trigger guard. Those who hook their finger while depressing the button, sometimes end up with their finger on the trigger, but if you depress the button and unholster the pistol without moving your finger, it will fall on the side of the frame where you'd normally have it prior to preparing to fire.

Cool!...I knew I'd get some good feedback and ideas from everyone! You guys have brought up points I'd have never considered. Just researching the holsters you are now using is pretty darn interesting. Thanks everyone!

I'm with Jyezahn on finger placement. I have one of the Blackhawk Serpas and I lay my finger on the holster just like I do the gun when it's out, so when the gun comes out, my finger is straight along the frame and not the trigger. It works well for my M&P22, M&P9 and M&P9c.

Update 9/16/13: Just got an S&W SD9VE and it fits in that holster fine also. :)
