Hi friends,
Recently I have been testing a new kydex IWB clip-on holster for my M&P 40 FS, it's called The Treadstone, from Overwatch Holsters.

The Treadstone is built from .080 thick Kydex with a sturdy ABS type belt clip which holds the rig securely to your belt while still allowing you to quickly remove it for those time you need to enter a "sheep" (gun-free) zone. I have seen this clip used on several other makers holsters and know it is quite popular. One of the nice things about Overwatch Holsters is that they do not charge extra for colors other than black. Currently you can order one of their rigs in black, coyote tan (pictured here) coyote grey, and blood red. The Treadstone can be ordered with a straight drop (as pictured here) or a forward cant but is not user adjustable so you need to decide when you order.

I am fortunate that I have lived in areas of the country that recognize a citizen's right to self-defense and have been carrying concealed pistols for the last twenty years. Like many, I started out thinking I needed to carry a tiny gun so it would be easier to hide. I was constantly worried I might "print" and would have to produce my permit to an anxious police officer who had been called by a worried on-looker.

I gradually began to realize two things, first by using an IWB holster strong side (at the 3 or 9 o'clock position) instead of the more common advice of wearing an IWB slightly behind the hip, I could easily bend at the waist without having the butt of the pistol stick out for all the sheep to see.

Second, most folks you encounter out in public (at least in the United States) are so absorbed in their own world (and their damn "smart" phones) that they would never even notice a sawed off shotgun stuffed in your waistband much less a discretely carried pistol in a proper holster.

It's for these reasons I much prefer to carry full-sized service pistols. The Treadstone came with an interesting feature that I have never encountered before. As you can tell by the photos of the holster I am left-handed. I don't usually have a problem bumping the mag release while the pistol is in the holster but usually I am carrying a Glock 17 or 21, which in the 3rd Gen models I use have smallish mag releases. The M&P 40 has what I would call a large mag release and it protrudes outward to an unusual amount. Using another brand of IWB holster I have dumped the mag several times in this pistol when I leaned back into a metal framed chair. I went so far as to reshape the release button with my dremel tool to lower it's profile.

What The Treadstone offers is a covered mag release which protects the button from being pushed in. A great idea in theory, but as I discovered it was not without a price.

I found that while the extra kydex covering the mag release button did protect from bumps, it also pinched the skin of my hand when I placed the pistol into the holster during drills. After studying the design for awhile I noted that if the kydex around the FRONT of the mag release were cut away, while leaving the kydex on the back side of the holster covering the back of the mag release, this would eliminate the pinch point while still keeping the release button from being pushed in. I think this is a simply modification the end user can make or you could probably ask Ian at Overwatch Holsters to do it for you. I should mention that I believe Ian builds in this covered mag release on left-handed holsters only as he believes southpaws are more prone to accidentally hitting the mag release.

That is the only thing I could find to criticize on this rig. The release tension was set perfectly, and there is good clearance built into the sight tunnel to clear any oversized night sights you might prefer. The Treadstone offers a good speed cut and the bottom is of a closed muzzle design with enough room to let moisture drain out.

I left the best part for last. The Treadstone currently sells for a very reasonably $40 plus shipping, and the cool colored kydex is a no charge option. Order turnaround currently is listed at a very fast 3-4 days.

The Treadstone can be found here:

Thanks for the review, and for the high quality photography. I've been looking at this style of holster for a while. I like the price a lot, and the quick turnaround. There does seem to be a lot of holster material forward of the trigger guard, under the barrel of the gun. And it's a shame that the tension isn't adjustable. I guess for 40 bucks and a quick order turnaround, you can't have it all, right?

Thanks again; great review.

Hokie, I have one also. Believe me, you don't actually need any adjustment with this design. The holster will hold my gun upside-down, but the gun just slips in and out smoothly. The molding holds it very well. If you really need it tighter for some reason, you can simply take your belt in another notch.
I've never liked Kydex holsters but the little number Ian sold me changed my mind. As you can see in the photos, they finish their product very nicely. No sharp corners for snagging the ol' belly (one of my primary dislikes on previous Kydex items I've tried.)

Nice holster and review. How low/high does it ride inside your waist band?

The line shows where it'll sit on top of the belt. Anything above the line will be above the waistline.

Of course, I can raise or lower it upon request. I can go as custom as anyone wants really.

RE: The covered mag release. With some experimentation I have realized I can half cover the release and it gives a lot of protection still.

Due to this review I think I might offer the option of mag release covered or uncovered.

As for the amount of material forward of the trigger guard, I'm now only using two eyelets on full-size guns. I can't remove any more length wise - I need enough from where the Kydex meets and the edge to fit the eyelets.

These holsters are continually evolving as I learn and get feedback. Right now, they are pretty damn sharp but that doesn't stop me looking to improve - and it's particularly this kind of review and others feedback that helps me a lot.

Great price on a good looking kydex holster.

I would like it better with adjustable tension on the clamshell.

I think I said it before in another thread... on all the test versions, no one used the adjustable tension.

Basically, a lot of work goes into getting the retention and balance right.

Between that and a decent belt, the only way this might come out by accident is if you go bungie jumping. Otherwise it pops out by pulling on the grip.

Adjustable tension on an IWB to my mind is either a selling point gimmick, or making up for a sloppy holster.

On an OWB... sure. The belt isn't adding to the retention, and lifestyle and/or purpose is a thing. Wether it's duty, sport or CCW.

The holy grail for me is adjustable cant.

Thanks for your reply. It's good to know you can customize it to the customer's wishes.

Personally I like the grip of my gun to be just far enough away from my belt as to be able to get a full firing grip the first time I reach for it without trying to dig it from behind my waist band. What good is concealment if you can't bring the gun to bear quickly and efficiently when/if the time comes?

I guess your clip is what caught my eye and I like the way it's made. It's looks like it would be easier to put on and take off than what I have now.

Here is the holster that I'm using now and the height/cant is perfect after I ordered a blank clip, drilled holes and raised the holster. (I added the gray rubber step tread to help keep it from shifting)

Is the ride height and cant something you can do?

How long before you start selling an adjustable cant version?

Absolutely.

I like the rubber pad, that's pretty smart and simple. Can see why it's shifting though - those clips are great but not for using like that.

That, I don't know. I'm working on it. It's a lot harder than you would think to do neatly and consistently.

Good to know you can make one with the height and cant that I like.

I got the rubber tread tape at ACE hardware and it works great for lots of things. That stuff sticks and holds fast too. I guess the reason the holster will shift a little is because I'm up and down out of an office chair a lot. I also like to wallow around in the chair. :)

The clip I ordered is exactly like the one that came with my holster except it didn't have the mounting holes drilled. I just drilled them in the place to bring the holster up about 1/4" higher.

That clip is normally used down the side where it can be inset.

I suspect there are two other reasons to why it might slip so much. I say other parts, because bouncing around on a chair will of course push a full size gun around. I do the same sort of thing. :D

Houser52, what holster is this? Thanks.

It's a LaTour custom kydex. He doesn't have a website and works through email and Face Book. Shipping took only a few days.

The holster is very well made, fits my Shield perfectly and no sharp edges anywhere.

I have a question. does the tan holster in this review have a bodyguard/sweat guard on it? if so, is it medium or full length? I'm about to order one, and I'm not sure whether I want that or which length if I do get it. thanks!

It does, and it's full bodyguard.

It really is a personal thing, but I would recommend trying the full first if you don't have a T-Shirt between your skin and the gun. If you don't get on with full, you can always mail it back and have it shortened at no cost. The sweatguard can always be removed, but not added to.

Personally, I only use medium and don't have a t shirt between the gun and me, but like I said, it really is a personal thing.

How difficult is reholstering in this? Is there any collapse to it?

There is absolutely no collapse at all. It's a very strong plastic the holster is molded from.
