This weekend I took my 4506-1 to gunshow to find a holster
and a distributor for HUME holsters had a very small variety.
Just for kicks I shoved my gun into a holster that was supposedly
made for a SIG 220 or 226 and it fit perfectly. I then searched
out the only two other style holsters he had for the Sig 220 and
Sig 226 and they fit perfectly also.

Specifically I own the 4506-1 and a 1006 which both have a rounded
off trigger guard and the Sig pistols have squared off trigger guards
but the trigger guards of my SW seemed to perfectly fit the
trigger guard indentions in the Hume holsters. Well anyway
they were not the type holsters I needed but we all need to
create our own "or equal" model number list for our older
discontinued guns.

Great tip. It's been frustrating finding a quality holster for my 1006. Thanks for the info.

ETA: I have this one on the way for my 4506. Will report on it when it gets here.

What size did you order and why did you pick that size ?

I think we have two considerations with holster fitment...
Stiffness rigidity and shape, and overall size.

I have some soft leather holsters that really serve more as
a pouch than a specifically boned and formed holster. These
holsters basically fit all my medium and full sized guns. It
is just that some of the guns fit deeper into them.

As regards highly formed leather and plastic or kydex holsters
for instance, shape very much matters.

I have a precision molded plastic holster for
1911 Govt models that when I try to slide my 4506 into,
only the barrel will insert. The trigger guard on 4506 and
1006 pistols are much wider than 1911 Govt models and
the trigger guards will prevent any further insertion.

P220 holster and 4506/1006, The S&W is a bit thinner, but it is longer. So dependent upon the holster a 1006 will not fit in a holster made for a 220.
P220 holster and 1076/4566, these fit quite well.
I have a Milt Sparks for the 220, my 1006 will not fit into it well enough to use, it sticks out. Either my 1076 or 4566 fit OK just a mite loose.

Fit the other way is a no go the SIG will not fit into holsters made for the S&W that I have.

The dimensions of the 1911 are not enough similarto either the SIG or S&W for a fit with any of the above, unless you have a very sloppy holster.

My advice; try before you buy.

I should have clarified that the three Hume holsters for the
Sig P220 and 226 were open bottomed holsters and while
the body of the SW Pistol seemed to fit snug, the barrel of
the 4506-1 did stick out the bottom an inch or so longer
than the SIG guns.

Thanks for the info. A RSR paddle holster (with the finger release lock) for a Sig 220 would not accept a 4566. However, a 511 kydex holster for the 220 does hold the 4566 tolerably well. Good enough for an IDPA match, I think.

Holster that fits

I tried out the Sig 220/226 and it didn't fit my 4506-1 in the Blackhawk Serpa model.

The Sig 2022 concealment Serpa fit very well. It rocks forward and aft about 5 degrees, but locks in great.

The old trick is alot of holsters for the Beretta 92/96 fits 4506/1006reasonably well. Barrel and slide lenght and size is about right, trigger guard shape and size is close.

The biggest problem if you don't have the proper holster for the Gen. 3 large frame autos is, alot of their weight is north of the slide stop. This weapons system takes an 1 3/4" double layer, stiff, leather belt. The holster, unless a drop type, needs a tight fitting belt loop. Or, the gun seems to flop a bit, while is on your belt.

Try running when that event is going on. Man, it is distracting. When I was running with that beast, I wasn't doing it for exercise, either.
I have enough holsters to fit my 1026, so I don't have a problem. But, I was collecting holsters for it, 20+ years ago, too.

My holsters.

Belt slide holster-Galco Combat Master #292. Lists for an H&K USP, among others, but fits all 3rd gen autoloaders, both trigger guards. Safariland IWB #3s, w/thumbreak, lists for a Beretta 92/96. Fits perfectly and the thumbreak works too. I have always wanted a sticky thread listing cross-referenced holsters for our 3rd gens. Maybe some day.:)

Bianchi used to list Beretta 92 holsters as the fit for the 5" S&W autos. I have a square triggerguard 4506, & a 1006 with the round trigger guard. Some Beretta 92 holsters need to be stretched a bit for the thumb snap to fit on the square trigger guard 4506. Open top holsters should be no problem.

If the idea of an open top holster without the thumb safety strap doesn't bother you, this is the Safariland 568 "custom fit".

Retention tension is adjustable, it's semi-formed and works well with either my 4506-1 or 945PC gun.

Custom fitting the 4506

I used a Bianchi #5 (0613) for my square guard 45-06. I custom fit the 4506 by soaking the holster in a 50-50 solution of alcohol (rubbing!) and water until the leather was saturated. Crammed the gun (wrapped in kitchen plastic wrap) into the softened holster, working the leather around the various curves and trigger guard. Attached the strap and left overnight until dry. Finished up with a good coating of leather conditioner.

Thanks for the original tip and all the ones that followed. I was having trouble finding a holster for my 4506 no dash with square trigger guard. I found a fantastic NOS Don Hume holster on the 'Bay. However it was built for and marked S&W Md 645. The leather is very stiff and nicely finished. The fit is tight but not too tight. It is a "pancake" style and is perfect for my needs.

Fobus 220 holsters work great for the rounded 4506-1 trigger gaud models.

I have a blackhawk serpa holster i believe for the sig 226 and had to make a notch for the slide release for it to lock in place. It works great for my 4506-1 , 3913, and a 5906 I use to have.

I bought a turkish made Shoulder rig intended for a B92.... actually fits very nicely!!
