home defense question

In the city!

My mom did not lock the door until 2005, things were changing then.

Just two miles away I lock my door whether I up or in bed. In fact I bought a stronger iron outer security door to get back that sense of security that I am use to.

I also have several shot guns, a safe full of Smiths and a revolver near the front. That saying, "carrying a gun is not supposed to be comfortable, is to give you a sense of comfort and security." I don't know who said that but I find it is true so I almost always have a gun on me. (not in PJs) And I never never walk out the front door without one. All that being said my neighborhood is not a killing ground, merely a working class neighborhood.

I have hopes of moving to a better area outside the city in a year or two.

In answer to your question, the bedroom door is open at night. We recently purchased a house in a 55+ community where the local cops say a crime around here is a rare thing. That said we still have a home defense gun at the ready, but safe especially if the grandkids are around.

I cannot believe anyone would give you advice to just shoot through the door. Sounds like the kinda advice you would get from Biden!!
Never shoot without knowing your target ..NEVER.
Never say never. Where I live there is one way in, one way out. I sleep in front of the dead bolted door. At 3:00 am in the morning someone can knock and go on down the road if I do not answer. If he decides to come through that door the door I will certainly shoot through the door. I do not shoot anyone for knocking. I do not engage in fist fights or gunfights inside my apartment. Anyone outside can and should identify themselves. If I waited for them to arrive inside, I might have
three home invaders with AK-47's.

Many people here live in a big house. I live in a very small apartment. There are no safe rooms. The place I have to stop a criminal that takes my door down is at the outside door. In a big house you can set yourself up a safe room. I have had a number of late night visitors that wanted me to open my door.
I don't do it. If they want to stay healthy they best not break it in with me inside. Where I sleep I would have to roll back a bit so that when the door comes down it don't hit me.

What I hear about this subject is usually those who have big houses and think that one size fits all. I also do not have knives, I don't do karate, I am an old man. I don't intend to be
the next victim they portray on first 48.

I assess the threats based on knowledge of the area where I live, and I don't just blindly follow what someone said in a
book nor in a dime store novel.

re: "Nice, quiet neighborhoods"

Every few days, the LE task forces here in Phoenix bust a human smuggling safe house or drug distribution house (thousands of pounds/kilos of pot, coke, heroine, whatever being repackaged and routed to different sales points in the US). Those houses are ALWAYS in "nice, quiet neighborhoods". Crooks don't want to attract attention by other crooks. They move into spec homes in subdivisions near schools. Drive mini-vans. Mow their lawns. Look "normal"
