Anybody have one of them home weather stations? I have wanted one for years but can't convince myself to spend the money on one. I had one in a shopping cart at least twice in Cabelas store but put it back. I can get the weather on the TV, radio, computer, cell phone, but for some reason I want one.

I have the Davis Vantage Pro 2 and love it. Have had it about three years now and completely trouble free. Had a cheaper Lacrosse before and it really wasn't worth the time and effort. Bought the Davis from Weathershack.com, good people and if you talk to them they often have some sort of special that makes it even more attractive.

Well, if you really want one go ahead and buy one and then compare it's readings with what the closest weather station reports.

I have a thermometer, barometer and a rain gauge that I check daily. The first thing I do after I get out of bed is walk my dog, so I figure out the wind direction and approximate speed.

OR.... I can turn on my computer and get the same information before I walk the dog.

Weather reports were always an important part of my job when I was working, since I retired I still pay attention to them daily to decide if I should go hunting or fishing.

If you have children or grand kids, a weather station would be a good teaching tool to get them interested in physical science.

My Father In-Law had one but it was the wired kind. Anyway it was linked to his computer and he could pull up all kinds on information from past dates, it would show trends, all kinds of stuff. I liked that but thats all the knowledge I have on these things. The wireless ones look like something I might want if there any good.

I have a hardwired Radio Shack (accuweather) system from 1996 and it is still going strong and accurate and is a complete system. I have wireless systems but not as complete.

A friend of mine purchased an AcuRite (wireless) system in Feb. and had a few problems to begin with and once he got it straightened out it works great and he is a reporting station for Weather Underground. It takes an extra AcuLink internet bridge to register online if interested.

My Vantage Pro is wireless, solar powered, 25' up and 75' from the console. It has a lot of history stored on board but I have considered purchasing the software to get the graphs etc. New guns always seem to take priority.

Absolutely no use for 'em, but I do admire the mechanical, analog instruments... Well, I say "no use," but they'd be a nice decoration/knickknack...

Simple weather forecast

You want an outdoor outing and the weather forecast is unfavorable, if you stay home the weather is perfect, if you go than the weather will be a life-threatening experience.

A favorable weather forecast means nothing to your outdoor plans. You will have problems.

I no longer check the weather forecast before deciding on the day's activities. Just make your plans and do it. :D

I live in the desert I just look out the window. Hardly ever any change except during the monsoon season and you can see that coming.

I have a La Crosse Technology complete station. Have had it for years. Worked last time I hade it hooked up, had to remove it when we had a new roof put on and have been to lazy to put it back up. Does the wind, rain, etc. Only thing is the batteries need replacing especially in the coldest part of the winter. Would be better for me with a hard wired one so no need for batteries. I have no complaints with it. Think I'll get out and put it back up.

I have found even the closest station to me can be off a few degree compared to my readings, so I your into accurate readings a home unit will get you there. You can also hook the newer one up to a computer and save all your trends.

Check out Amazon Smiles and read their reviews on the different units.

Davis Vantage 2 here also. I have had mine at least 12 years and it is showing its age outside. UV really gets it but it still works and hangs in there.

I would replace it in a minute if it broke. I really love it and like monitoring the weather. I can look back years on my trends and track records for various parameters.

After wanting a weather station for several years I finally sprung for a solar powered wireless Davis Vantage Vue this past spring. I have the outdoor sensor array mounted above the roof of my barn about 250 feet away from the console in the house. All the data is uploaded to wunderground automatically, so now when I get asked "How much rain did you get?" I can show them or they can look it up. So far the only problem I've had is my shelterbelt is doing what it was designed to do, so I don't get a true wind reading.
