Photo from right before marching across the football field and the more casual was from school last Friday - complete with the traditional "Mum" worn by girls representing the Homecoming Court.

Almost eight years ago when our son first attended school in our adopted, and forever, hometown some of his ignorant peers tried to nickname him China-boy (he's from Nam Dinh Province, Viet Nam).

This past week he was voted the Pride of Mills County, Golden Eagle Marching Band Homecoming Beau. Along with Gretchen, the Band Sweetheart (and his prom date from last spring) he, they, represented the band in the homecoming court and marched across the gridiron with other "cool kids." He's come a long way and we don't hear China-boy anymore. More importantly he's an "A" student.

He, Gretchen, and four other students, all great kids, have a group that hangs out together and do things together at least once a week. Their demographics are white, Latino/Latina, white/Latino/Latina, and Vietnamese.

They call their group Rice, Beans, & Crackers. Their motto is "divided by race, united by racism" (a play-on-words joke). Left to their own devices kids today, at least these kids, think racism is a joke and it won't get you in with the "cool kids." We love them one and all!
