Hornady 124 gr XTP

I finally found some JHP bullets. They are 124 grain Hornady XTP 9mm, and I can't find any reloading data for this bullet. I thought surely in my stack of reloading manuals, including several from Hornady, I'd find something. The loads for 124 grain jhps are around 1050 fps, and nothing for this specific bullet. I'm looking for +p data. Any help?

Just earlier this week I found myself in somewhat the same situation. I had picked up a box of the same bullet from a local store. I checked online at Alliant to see what they had for Unique powder....they had loads for Speer GoldDots (same weight bullet, different design obviously). I looked through some of my other manuals and gathered what I could from them too. After crunching the numbers and picking a starting point I felt comfortable with, I broke out some dies for the old single stage press and loaded half a box with several different charge weights.

I ran all of them over my PACT chronograph at the range using my 4" XD9 and a couple of them using my Kahr PM9 3".

I use my standard 9mm range load as a benchmark at the beginning of the chrono session.....this verifies (within reason) that my setup is working as expected when I get the desired numbers out of chrono with a "known" load.

Powder in all loads was Alliant Unique. Each string consisted of five shots. Strings 1-5 shot with XD9 4". Strings 6 & 7 shot with PM9 3". COAL = 1.125"

As always, use this info at your own risk while practicing safe reloading procedures.

#6 - 5.3 gr 124 gr Hornady HP/XTP 1021 FPS 39.6 SD
#7 - 5.4 gr 124 gr Hornady HP/XTP 1077 FPS 5.8 SD

For what it is worth, Alliant used 5.8 gr of Unique behind the GoldDot loads so I felt comfortable with my starting point of 5.0 gr behind the XTPs. The primers on my loads gave no indication of excess pressures that I could detect. The edges of the primers were still rounded (not hammered flat).

Unique may be a little slow burning for the 3" Kahr. I've got a couple of other possible candidates that I might try before settling on Unique.

Thanks for the info. I was going to use the Gold Dot info, but that 5.0 Unique/1142fps load looks like just the ticket. Almost matches the velocity of my WW Ranger +p factory stuff, and seems like a pretty mild load. I'll try some and see how it goes.

I can't do any better on the loading data already supplied but i just recently ordered 500 Rem 124g JHP from Midway, they had them in stock.
Also they seem to have a good supply of Ranier plated 124g RN, using 5.0g of PowerPistol I've had great luck with these much less expensive than the XTP's. I put in an order for 4K and had them within a week.

Sorry....COAL = 1.125"

That was my first run with that length. I might shorten it up just a bit (while reducing the powder charge)......say to about 1.1". Gotta work up some more and run them again.

The OAL is 1.060 using the powders listed in the Hornady manual for the 124 gr xtp.

The current Hornady manual obviously has data. It's just one reason to update your manuals. For a +P load, I run 5.5gr of Unique or 5.6gr of WSF under a 124grXTP @ 1.120" for 1150fps from my G26, close to 1200fps in a G17.

OAL is EXTREMELY important in the tiny 9mm case.

The American Rifleman ran a test years ago, where a few hundredths difference in seating depth, took a 34,000psi load, and turned it into a 65,000psi load.

Also beware of switching FMF OAL, with HP OAL.

Took the locking lugs right off a Model 39 no dash Smith years ago, because of this. Smith replaced the barrel for free.
