Hot Sauce

Isn't Texas Pete made in North Carolina? Wonder why they didn't name it North Carolina Pete?

You are correct, it is made in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. No idea why they named it Texas Pete but at any rate it is good. I had forgotton about Dave's Insanity Sauce, good stuff too but a little goes a long way!

If you live in a part of the country that has Fire House Subs, they have a rack with about 50 different bottles of hot sauce. If's a great way to try different ones to see what you like. I'll usually grab a couple and try them on a chip before I put it on my sub. I know the stuff called "357 Magnum" ain't for sissies. It's just crazy.

Right now, as I am reading this thread, at 11:12 p.m., I'm sucking down my second Bloody Mary tonight and I topped it off with a generous dollop of Tabasco!

Yes, I like all kinds of hot sauce. For just everyday use, any of those "generic" pepper sauces that cost no more than a dollar a bottle will do. I generally use them on eggs.

I also like that "rooster sauce" that you find in the Asian resturants. I always keep a bottle of that handy.

When I want to "Liven Up" a meal...

I liven things up with Royal Bohemian TripleXXX Super Nitro
Horseradish sauce. I love the flavor, and can usually resume
breathing in less than a minute after a bite. When this stuff is fresh,
it can't be beat for flavor or heat. Use it on just about anything, AND,
it's perfect for Bloody Mary's.
This doesn't have the tongue-searing burn of peppers.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned "Sriracha" sauce (asian hot chili sauce-made in L.A.). Every bit as hot or hotter than Franks, Crystal, Tobasco, Tapatio, Cholula, etc. but with a more complex flavor (IMO anway).
You beat me to it. Huy Fong Foods Sriracha sauce and available at your local Walmart.

May not be my favorite but it's my go to sauce presently.

Best value for a tasty and quality product. It has a place in most homes.

Dave's Insanity. I don't recommend it, just telling you about it. Hottest I ever ate, unpleasantly so, even in the days when I made everything really hot, and my system tolerated it.

My favorite is Brutal Bajan, a unique mustard based hot sauce. It's very cheap, too. It's not hot enough for me so I add some 500,000 SHU (Scoville Heat Unit) pure extract to get the right degree of heat. I put this on most of my food.

The most intense hot sauce I have is Mad Dog .357 Collector's Edition, which is 600,000 SHU. This level of heat is starting to be very dangerous and few people want to bother with it. Many have dared to try it but nobody has ever asked me for seconds. I mix one drop with barbeque sauce and spread it evenly on a burger. Even though it's dangerously hot I can still taste the flavor.

My favorite hot sauce store sells pure extract that is rated at 5 MILLION SHU. This stuff is so dreadful that it is sold as a food additive and not a sauce. I don't see how any human could eat wings that are painted with it. Today the product can be so highly refined that it is extremely dangerous.

Sunday night I fried some sheepshead we caught at the jetties in Georgetown. As usual,I applied a generous amount of Texas Pete hot sauce after they were done.I also love Texas Pete on fried chicken.I prefer Texas Pete over Tobasco anytime.Anyone elst like hot sauce on fried food? What is your favorite?

How do you cook sheepheads?? Here in N.Y they are tossed on the bank for the sky rats. (Seagulls) I'm willing to try them if they're good.

Are you knutz?????? Sheephead is a wonderful fish. True they have a lot of bones and are a pain to clean, but the white flesh is second to none down here. I rank them with Specks and Flounder.

I love Jamaica Hellfire Sauce, the hottest variety, which is of course no longer available in the Cleveland area (that I know of).

I also like Dave's Insanity Sauce... also no longer available.

For a while, I was buying the Tabasco brand habanero sauce... also now unavailable.
For the time being, I can still get Valentina brand habanero sauce at the local Giant Eagle.

I alternate between Tabasco brand and another no-name brand of jalapeno sauce. Chef Hans is GREAT... and now unavailable here.

There used to be an actual hot sauce store in the same strip mall where my favorite local family restaurant is located. They of course closed...

It's my contention that the average Clevelander likes no food with any more taste than the packaging in which it came. They consider mayonnaise on white bread, "spicy ethnic food".

I like Spontaneous Combustion. It is made with Habanero peppers. If that didn't make it hot enough they added Capsicum extract. A little goes a long way. This is best used in soups, stews and chili. Also I strongly recommend that after using this you wash your hands very well. Capsicum is (I believe) is one of the ingredients to pepper spray:eek:. Have fun

I've always felt that most of those 'extreme' hot sauces are only novelties. Used to impress or disgust yer buddies. I like hot & spicy , but taste & flavor come first.

Be careful what you use, folks. Some of this stuff is guaranteed to come back and bite you in the *** a few hours later!

My wife and I have a favorite Mexican restaurant not far away, and periodically we order a take-home pint of their hot sauce which we dearly love. To us, most of the store-bought stuff just doesn't make the grade. For those in the Phoenix area, check out Jordan's Mexican Restaurant on North 7th Street. This family has been serving up Mexican food since 1946, and they know their stuff. Their sauce is not the hottest, but it's very flavorful and does not have the characteristic mentioned above!
