FWIW, some, if not all of the 686 MG were shipped with white outline rears.

I'd like to go shooting with you guys sometime, with all those little bitty grips and real magnum loads?

I like the mountain guns if no other reason than the tapered barrel/half ejector shroud. I think they look, handle, and carry better than the full underlug 686.

However, I was under the impression that a mountain gun could be had in a 5" barrel? Or are they all 4".

Also, what is the sequence with the dash numbers on these guns? Is there a dash number that has no mim parts and the integral cylinder stop (the old style)?

Thanks

Wayne02, Every MG I ever saw is a 4"

The 686-5 with Prod. Code 104200 MG doesn't have the IL it does have MIM Hammer and Trigger

Hope that helps.

Thought I would give this tread a bump, as I recently acquired a 686+-5 MG. As another poster noted, my version came with a WO rear sight, plus the front of the cylinder is not beveled like the one's on my N-frame MG's.

Some initial observations:

This is my first Smith with a frame-mounted firing pin and the "much maligned by some" MIM parts. Upon internal inspection, I noticed that the rebound slide was black to boot. First Smith that I have had that had a rebound slide finished like this......another MIM part? That said, the internal frame of this gun has the least amount of tool marks of any that I can remember, virtually zero. This is a nicely crafted piece. Say what you want about the MIM guns, but everything on this revolver is nicely fitted. Installed a 14lb.rebound spring, a little tweak to the factory mainspring, and minimal polishing got me a nice smooth 7lb. 12oz DA pull. The trigger is a wider version of the smooth combat trigger that is on my older N-frame MG's. It's kind of like a smooth target, so the jury is still out on this, as I am used to those smooth .312" combat triggers. Hopefully, this gun is a shooter. Too bad this version of the MG came out after Bill Jordan passed........I'm betting he would have been more than pleased to ride the river with this 7 shooter!

Of course, the 629-2 Mountain Revolver doesn't say "Mountain Gun" on it anywhere--which is why I own one! ;-)

...maybe I could get S&W to laser-etch "SIX TIMES" in great big letters on the side....

...or maybe, "Tactical". Yeah, that's the ticket!

Seriously--those are grips from the .500 magnum, and a sling swivel stud replaces the Hogue screw in case I want to tie a lanyard to it.

Before I do something dumb, does anyone know if any of the Mt Guns came with ported barrels? I have a 625-6, at least I think it is -6 could be -5, Mt Gun in 45 Colt which is ported and I want to know if it might possibly have come that way.

Thanks jefats. I didn't remember ever seeing any of the Mountain Guns factory ported but thought I'd check just to be sure. Now I think I will have those ports plugged, get some speedloaders and see about doing some IDPA shooting with it. Somebody did a pretty good trigger job on it so it has one extremely smooth DA pull. As to the SA, almost a hair-trigger it is so light.

One of these days I'm going to take it to the range over some sandbags and just see what it will do SA. In fact both the 625-6 and 25-13 Mountain Gun I have because shooting SA they will both almost put bullets in the same hole in normal off-hand shooting.

Found at my local shop. Used but unfired for $435 OTD.

And, apologies to the squeamish, my beloved 629MG, bought new 11/02, after it's worst-ever day at the range. Totally my fault, too. S&W sold me a standard 4" 629 for a song - and returned the one still-useful part - the barrel.

I could still get sob over that! I was lucky - no, blessed.

Yaoza!! What happened? I bet THAT woke you up!!

The big difference in Mountain Guns and the standard N-frames is that the MG's feel like the .44 Specials of old, with better balance, weight, and "packin" qualities. Heft a .44 MG and a regular 629 and you'll know what I mean.

Mountain Guns are all 4"

In the 686+ version? No. The "-5" version is the earliest (and I believe only).

+1

The difference in feel is significant.
