I have a Model 64 (no dash) with the serial number D754XXX. I have estimated it was produced around 1975-1976.

One: How close do you think I am?

Two: Being a K-frame all steel model I believe it should handle +P loads. I don't shoot +P exclusively, only a box or two every few months (if that much). Since I hate to assume, will this safely handle +P loads?

Model 64

Welcome to the Forum.

+P is fine in that revolver.

Thank you for the welcome and the information. Using my "age limited" computer skills, everything I've been able to find said the same thing, but most of what I found was not very specific. I traded for this pistol many years ago from a local LEO. He had purchased it for an "off-duty" and "back-up" gun, but complained it was too heavy to wear in an ankle holster (duh). My wife had claimed it and used it for her CCW qualification pistol. When she requalified, to renew her license, she shot my 4" Security Six (still using .38 Special loads) and liked the longer sight radius. Now she's taken it and returned my Model 64. As I said in my original post, I hate to assume, so I thought I'd ask some people who would know.

The factory has stated in writing that any model stamped steel K or N frame in .38 Special is approved for factory + P. It is not super hot historically so fire away!

I reload all my .38 Special ammo, and I never flirt with "hold my beer" level loads. I get my +P loads from Lyman, Hodgdon, Hornady, or powder manufacturers data. I always drop a couple tenths of a grain, and lately I weigh every charge. Needless to say, I don't run huge batches at a time. I've always said, reloading
is my "me time" and I'm not in any hurry.
