Have been thinking about getting another S&W lately but I've always been more of the full-lug barrel, target grip kind of guy. I was looking at a 686 when I looked back into the cabinet and noticed this. I have no idea why but this pencil barrel, blued gun just talked to me, can't explain it.

Anyway, it looks to be shot very little. 4", model 10-5, the grips are numbered to the gun, serial number is C832641 if someone can tell me approximately when that would date to? Pinned, but it doesn't have recessed chambers. Very slight blueing loss on the front of the barrel edges, it's going to make a fine shooter. It has a screw under the grip and on the front strap between the grips, makes it a 4 screw right?

Here's a couple pics, got this for $275 out the door, gotta love tax free New Hampshire!!

By the way, how do you guys make your blue guns look so nice?

Looks good to me. That's a 3 screw, the fourth would be at the top of the sideplate next to the hammer (the one on the frontstrap is the mainspring strain screw...it doesn't count :D ). I think you did great :)

Nice, I learned something new today. Thanks for the reply.

Yes it's a beautiful 10-5 and a 3 screw revolver. If it had the screw up by the hammer it would be a 5 screw and there would also be one in the front on the top of the trigger guard. On a 4 screw gun the one by the hammer was deleted.

Congratulations on the purchase !!!

I happened to pick up same model (10-5) at the Phoenix gun show today - paid a bit more than you did. Still think I made out ok. Like you say, it called out to me and the smaller grip size fits me great! Can't wait to shoot it ...

You bought it right! Most Model 10's for sale in the $250 to $300 range seem to exhibit more finish wear. For $275 I'd buy one like that in a heartbeat...

Model 10 boxes are fairly common, I picked a real nice one up on GB for $10 + shipping...

They have a bad habit of doing that! But, I don't mind, if I can afford it!

Awesome gun for an awesome price. But, be careful they may become habit forming!

Nice find and for a good price.

The 10-5 should have been shipped in the 2 piece blue box.

The model 10 with the tapered barrels are all great shooters. Enjoy.

Looks almost exactly like mine. Mine's dated to the same period, 66-67.
I only wish I would've paid $275. I think you did GREAT!

I'll bet it shoots just as well as mine too.

That is a great gun. The Model 10 is a thoroughbred revolver. The skinny barrel is better IMHO than the heavy barrel which isn't necessary, makes the gun heavier, and was added as a fad if you ask me.

Really neat revolver. I went away from smiths for a while and missed them....must have fell on my head or something. When I returned to the hunt for smiths, the four inch -5 tapered barrel was the the first one I picked up and I am really glad I did. It carries well and with some orange paint on the front sight, it is a quick and handy pointer. Great price too, by the way. Yours looks pretty enough to be proud of, but not so perfect you'd be afraid to use it.
