How did this get started for YOU

I've been lurking here for a while now, Joined a few months ago... Have'nt posted much at all.
I was wondering how some of us got into collecting these beautiful and addictive handguns...
It started when i was 18, I purchased a nice 28 from a co-worker for 150.00.
Kept that baby with me till somebody liked it better than me. Stole it from my house...Thats all they took.
Long story short Bought a 686 no dash back in 2008.
Had this longing to replace that 28, found a nice one with box and papers and it was more addictive than anything... thats another story.
I've added a REALLY nice 36-2 w/ box and paper and tools.

For me it was a local auction of about 95 handguns of which about
50 or so we're Smiths. I fell in love with a 66-3 3" that i bought at
that auction. Then stumbled onto this website and the rest is history.
Great times have been had with my friends shooting and hunting
and now i've focused my collecting efforts solely on older S&W
revolvers that are'nt made anymore but are quality thru and thru.

Just a sigma I got as a present. Then I was looking for a 10mm after a character in a book. That led to 3rd gens and the fun of finding them at a good price. Now I'm looking at 1911e's, even though I can't afford one right now. I joined the forum when my hunts for info kept leading me to this site. I've enjoyed it as you will, and probably already do.

All I used to have was semiautomatics until my buddy asked - have you tried a revolver- I said no - he let me shoot his 28-2, and I was hooked. So I bought a 27-2 3.5", then a model 1917, then a 29-2 6" then a 19 2.5", then a registered magnum, then a M36 2", then a 27-2 6" in nickel, you need nickel if all of the rest are blue, right? It's a beautiful sicknesss, ha ha.

It started for me when I got a 2-gun Roy Rogers holster set when I was 5 years old. I saw every cowboy movie and war movie that came to town from about 1950-1960. I was eight when I got my first real gun and I've been adding to it for the past 56 years.

My interest in S&Ws (all guns, really) started in the mid/late 50s. My Daddy was the purchasing agent for the county. He brought Sargent-Sowell catalogs home for me. They listed all the S&Ws in that book, with good pictures. They also sold holsters, Geo. Lawrence, I believe. I took those Sa-So books to school with me and studied them. I got some weird looks from some teachers, but that was a different time, and no one was alarmed. I knew the names of the revolvers as well as the Model numbers when I was 12. I wish I could find one of those old catalogs just for the nostalgia.

Bought my 1st smith a model 10 about 17 years ago for $100. Then really nothing for the next couple years. Then Louisiana started their CCW and needed a small revolver. So a model 36 showed up. Within the last three years 3 44 specials showed up and last but not least a model 15. You really can't just own one. Frank

My father brought a Broomhandle Mauser back after WW II;
he kept it wrapped in an oily rag on the top shelf of his closet.
I pestered him frequently to get it down so I could look at it.
He bought me a Winchester .22 when I was 11 & my best friend's
father bought me a model 10 when I was 16. It was Smith & Wessons
from then on until I started buying Colt DA revolvers in my 40's.
As I approach 60 I find I like them all- I shot Dad's Broomhandle
a couple of months ago.

I walked into Dean's Firearms in Atlanta when they were located on Spring St. Mid sixties and a high class gun store.
I spotted a beautiful blued Mod.19 with high figure Goncalo Alves stocks under the glass.Lying next to it was a Colt Diamondback with 2 1/2 inch barrel.
I bought both and started my police career a little later with that Mod.19.
I'm not really a collector,just an accumulator and end user. Later with three small kids,I got in a tight for cash and sold the Diamondback.

KB, I can't remember my dad not having a S&W revolver. Dad liked nickel Smiths. He had many of them, but not more than three at one time. Dad bought, traded and sold many Smiths. I still have the one that my dad never traded or sold and the last one he bought. When dad passed, and I received both of his nickel Smiths, I started, slowly, trying to build on his two. I have more nickel Smiths than any other finish and I do tend to have more than three at one time. lol My Dad started me down this path, and I am glad he did.

I got started in hunting at an early age. Bought a Colt 1911 in my stepfather's name before I could legally purchase one myself. Shot under bridges and creekbeds with friends throughout high school. He bought an M29 in the Dirty Harry days, and I bought a M66 when I graduated high school (again under his name). I still have the M66, I gave up hunting.

I wasn't brought up around firearms, and they were totally off my radar screen until Nov. 2008. Since then I have picked up a Sigma, SW99OL 9c, MK III 22/45, and a 9mm carbine. Better late than never.

A good friends Dad won the first National Police Revolver Championships back in 1962 and had been through the S&W Armorers school a couple times. When I started branching out from single action revolvers and 1911s he steered me to S&Ws. Since he is/was my main source of repair parts, repair tips and shooting tips it made sense to listen.

I goth hooked at a very you age shooting my Grandfathers Model #3

It was given to my grandfather when he left home at 12 to work the ranches in Nebraska and Colorado. Passed to my father, and I'll give it to my oldest son.

From there it just got worse.

My (own) first real gun was my other grandfather's Single barreled 16 gage shot gun. Killed my first deer about 8 with it. Had to pick up coke bottles along the highway to sell so I could buy 3 shot gun shells.

It kind of belonged to my aunt, but she wouldn't let it go "because she needed protection". I went and paid $28 bucks for a pot metal RG 38 and traded it to her for the shot gun, (which I still have, but it was made for black powder and not really safe to shoot).

I have one to start my own tridition. When I retired from the Anchorage Police Dept. they gave me my Model 28 Service Revolver. It'll probably go to my #2 son who is also in LE.

Wont say how many I have now, but I will tell you a 48 gun Liberty Fatboy wont hold 48 long guns.
