Yes, today, the anniversary of the best thing since....well forever. A benchmark that is to this day commented on numerous times daily.

This Day in History: Sliced Bread Made its Debut

On this day 86 years ago, the best thing since—well, since ever—hit store shelves: sliced bread.

The day before its official debut, Chillicothe Baking Company, the first company to produce and market this revolutionary new way to buy bread, put out a full-page ad in its local Missouri paper the Chillicothe Constitution Tribune.

Announcing: The Greatest Forward Step in the Baking Industry Since Bread was Wrapped—Sliced Kleen Maid Bread.

The ad slogan is possibly where the phrase "best thing since sliced bread" originated.

So walk on over to the kitchen and marvel on the best thing since...forever, and have a slice in celebration. ;)

The seven grain at Tom Thumb. Good stuff. The manager has family with the same cancer I have, so we talk often. I have been known to comment on the bread baking process.

I like whole wheat, too, and the post about Tom Thumb stores is good. I shop there and the store brand bread is quite good.

Safeway owns the Thumb stores, but has sold to Albertson's. The changeover is supposedly due in October. I don't know about their bread, but their prices are as high or higher than Thumb's.

Thankfully, Kroger's bread is also good and their overall prices are less than at rivals.

I've sometimes gotten whole wheat French baguettes at La Madelaine. I rather like slicing my own bread at times.

So... in 1927, was the expression "the best thing since wrapped bread?" Doesn't have quite the same ring to it.

I can't eat bread anymore so this has lost some of its luster. But I remember as a kid going on field trips to the Wonderbread factory and getting a free loaf of bread. Then we would eat the fresh baked bread in class all afternoon.

I used to repair bread slicers and they are very sophisticated machines. Actually the little machine that winds the bread twisties was my favorite. They wind clockwise and very tight too you may notice.
Changing the blades was the scary part though as those new serrated blades are sharp.

Thanks for posting, I have to go get something for lunch, I was sitting here thinking what to get, I will go get a reuben.:D

I heard one piece of toast tell the other in the toaster, "I havent been this hot since I was bread".

They coulda stopped slicin' with the two end pieces, far as I'm concerned. :D

Love me some heels....:)
