I have had excellent results with Turtle Wax Chrome Polish. It removes the rust freckles but does not hurt the blue.

The gun is not safe to use anymore! It's also now worthless. Since you have a worthless, dangerous gun......

..... you should send it to me and I'll take care of it for you. ;)

I've seen my father use 0000 steel wool and gun oil to remove small rust spots..... but I'm not recommending this because I've never really examined the gun to see how it turned out!

I was told by a Winchester collector to just rub a good quality gunoil on with your finger and let it sit. Would eventually lift the rust and not hurt the bluing. Wipe off each day and re-oil. Worked for me on a buddy's Model 42.

I have used a Teflon based lubricant and 0000 steel wool and have had good results, just dont get to aggresive with the rubbing

WD 40 and a bronze brush, i know wd40 is a no no for guns but try to keep it out of the action and clean the gun really well when you're done. The wd 40 will break the rust down easily and not harm the blue and the bronze brush will not hurt the finish at all. I had really good results doing this with a marlin .22 that i got really cheap because it was so freckled with rust. it looks almost new now.

Get a coarse stainless steel scowering pad. Use most any oil with it It will remove the rust and will not harm the bluing. Regular steel wool will add to the rust.

I had an old "Smith" tell me about this. I was afraid to try it. I had a gun that wasn't all that great. I tried it and it really does work.

The pads, usually (2) to a box, can be found at most any store. I've done it several times with good results.

Breakfree soak

Breakfree (civilian brand of military CLP) has a rust preventative that is very effective. It may take a while but coat the effected areas liberally. Let it soak for a few days. Come back and wipe away. Do this a few times. Unless the finish is really rusting deep I am hesitant to put metal brushes or pads to it. I have used a plastic bristle brush on case hardened parts with good results. Just take your time. If you experiment with the bronze wool or other items, go slow. If it scratches the finish stop and try something else. Hope this helps. It's what I do for rust.

0000 Steel Wool will scratch the HIGHLY polished S&W models. So will bronze and copper brushes.
You might have to use a magnifyer to see them well, but they are there.

0000 Steel Wool does not noticeably scratch satin finished guns and guns with a lower degree of polish like the inexpensive 22 rifles.

Bronze Wool in the finest grade available from Brownell's is the thing to use- WITH a good oil.

CorrosionX is the finest product for dissolving rust that I have found, and I have tried most of them. It is noticeably better than Break-Free and Wd-40, which are both good.
Give it time to work- days if necessary. Also keep the gun warm while it is working.

For encrusted rust, get a COPPER penny, apply oil to the encrustation, and use the penny as a scraper. I've used this method many times on more aggressive rust. Break-Free CLP can then be applied as a rust preventive.

New information for me here. I'd always thought I had good safe results from by soaking in Kroil and with judicious use of the brass brush. Now I'm going to have to go find my jeweler's loop and go stand outside in the heat in order to examine a few guns in sunlight. Thanks for the tip.

No steel wool or steel brushes of any kind; I know that for certain.

get a can of ZUD from the local grocery stare. Waterbased and takes off rust an leaves the blue alone. Have used it for over 30 years. No residue.
