How do I get the polecat small out of my German Shorthair?

Hummmmm?
Tomato juice worked on me and the dog.
One washing won't work--two or three times and the smell quiets it pretty good.
Mine was years ago--his was about 5 years ago.
Blessings

A couple of baths (good scrubbing) with a solution of Hydrogen Peroxide, Baking Soda and Dawn dishwashing liquid worked for me. Use 1 quart 3% Hydrogen Peroxide, 1/4 cup Baking Soda (sodium bicarbonate), 1 teaspoon of liquid dish soap. You can substitute white vinegar for the Hydrogen Peroxide. It doesn't completely eliminate the smell but it made it possible to let the dog back into the house. Only time will eradicate the smell completely. Even after a couple of months the smell is still somewhat evident if the dog gets wet. I also used a product called OdoBan to help with the smell in the house and on the dog's collar, etc.

Good Luck!

This look familiar? At least 2 of us like it.

The formula that was given to me by a veterinary group is:
1 quart of 3% peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda
1 teaspoon liquid soap
Bath the dog and rinse with plain water.

This works wonders. It will even remove the smell from the house if you wash down the areas the dog got up against. Good luck!

Second version is:
Mix together the following 3 items:

¼ cup baking soda
2 tablespoons of Dawn dishwashing liquid
(specifically Dawn, no substitute)
1 pint of peroxide

Use in a few minutes.
In an hour you will have a bubbly mess.

Just to add, make sure thats 3.5% H2o2 ... there's a 35% in the agricultural world that will absolutely burn skin in a terrible way.

Tomato juice is NOT a myth, but it apparently doesn't work in all cases. For me, it has worked on 4 dogs of various breeds.
I heard of the H2O2/baking soda/dish soap recipe just recently but haven't needed to try it (yet).

I have had no success w/ tomato juice...I just ended up smelling like skunk and tomato juice myself.

Peroxide, baking soda and dawn works.

I would like to try Febreze on the next go round.

When faced with a rotting carcass (raccoon, possum, black snake, etc.) under the deck in the basement escape well, etc. I arm myself with trigger spray Febreze. It thoroughly eliminates the odor. I then put my hands arms length into the bottom of the bag and gather up the remains turning the bag inside out and tying it off.

Wouldn't wanta bet on it. A normal dog==yeah once is enough! A GSP, especially a male------

My female never got skunked but she found an old gut pile. She jumped up in the car and my wife and I just looked at each other. Fortunately, the ranch owner had an old Irish setter and knew the tomato juice trick. Took two soapings and rinses and we still rode home with the windows down but we got home without killing her.

RIP, old girl. We miss you every day!

Just broke up with my girlfriend who has a GSP. ...I sure miss that dog.

The German Shorthair is just an outstanding looking dog. Combine that with loyalty and intelligence. I wish I could have one.

I knew a guy that was so mad at Skunks spraying his dogs I thought he would blow a corpsuckle. A neighborhood cat lady was putting out food and attracted a bunch of vermin. This guy put a shotgun by the backdoor and was on high alert. 2AM dog barks, guy gets out of bed and grabs shotgun. Guy hits the screendoor with 12G pointed down. His wife had hooked the screen door. With finger on the trigger and ready to go the guy hits the hooked door and gun goes off blowing off the front end of his right foot.

Our vet also recommended to bath the dog in coca-cola to help nuetralize the smell. For me it worked better than tomato juice. And I had some in the house at 10:00pm when he got spayed. Still took him in for a skunk bath the next day. The bad thing was that by the time I got the dog in in the garage and grabbed my .45 mr skunk had vamoosed the area. My plan was to give him a new 1/2" spray hole.

When I was a boy our dog would get sprayed occasionally. We let him run during the day but tied him up out in the woods at night for a couple of weeks. It helped if there was rain during that time. He didn't like it much, but it didn't stop him from chasing skunks.
