Picked up a nice minty M19 w/ the bright nickel finish.
I intend on firing the gun.
How/what do I use to keep the exterior clean without scratching it?
Is there a special cloth or product or cleaning technique to preserve the bright finish?

Thanks

The best thing I have found for giving nickel finishes a sparkling appearance is the Selvyt® SR Universal Polishing Cloth. Use one of these after the gun is clean and free of oil and it will sparkle. Selvyt makes a variety of jewelry cloths, but get the one that is NOT impregnated with a polishing agent.

Nickel Finishes

Since we're on the subject of nickel finishes, I just bought a 22 ( Model of 1950 ) in .45ACP, and I want to avoid using anything that would hurt its' prisitine finish. I have been told to avoid ammonia based bore cleaners as the ammonia attacks nickel ( true ?). Any other caveats ? I would appreciate any and all hints.

Alexel: You were told correctly. Avoid any of the ammonia based cleaners and be very careful with the rest. The ignition flash mark on the front of the cylinder should be wiped but best to not try to remove it totally. If the chrome finish is ever penetrated it is very susceptible to continued deterioration. ........ Big Cholla

Thanks, it never occured to me to be so vigilant, but apparently I'll have to be.

renaissance wax is the best product i have seen...protects blued,nickle,stainless,etc...works great on leather, marble, photographs, papers and what not...large museums use it to protect firearms...it's available on ebay...not cheap but is of great quality
