I have been acused of over researching, and thinking about it, until the deal is gone.
Can't tell you how many"great price" great deal" guns I let slip by.

So in the last 10 days I have bought three guns.

Rifle 10/22. Wood stock carbine, 3x9-42 Simions scope, two BX-25 mags+10 round mag, soft Ruger case. $170.00. Private sell. Buddy of mine sold it to me. Said "I know you will shoot it, where others will just try to make money on it.

Remington 870 Express. $270.00. Three inch - 28" barrel. Two boxes of shells shot thourgh it. Private sell. Guys wife felt uncomforable with it in the house!!!

Ruger P94 made in 2004. Police used pistol. High cap. 15 round, 9mm. $235.00 OTD gun store sell.
So three for $675.00.

After hearing that I over research, and think about it too much. I'am now on my Wife's radar. I have three guns I like but do not love.

I think I will go back and buy what I think is a good deal, and what I love. Maybe pull the trigger on buying them a little sooner.

What do you do when you run across a good deal??? I have never bought a gun with the ideal to sell it.
But now who knows???

What do you do when you run across a good deal???

For the last few years I've been trying to be, proactive, when it
comes to research, well the best my memory will allow.

There are two things that make me "jump" right away, a good price or a hard
to find model, or barrel length. The one thing that makes me jump the fastest
is a good price on a hard to find model, no matter if I was looking for one or not.

I snagged a nice Model 649-3 last year even though I had never heard of that
model before laying eyes on one. When I seen it in the case at a local
gun shop something told me to, "get it, just get it."

I started out 'Never selling one.'

Then I ran across a real deal, and bought it just for the ammo that it came with, then flipped the gun to get my money back. Some things I buy for the deal and some I buy because I love them and want them, some fall into middle ground between these as well. My main rule of thumb is simply don't put more into them than I can QUICKLY get back out of them in a pinch. Haven't had to do it but that isn't to say I never will.

I will say that a lot of the fun is in the hunt :)

I buy with Ca$H.

I worked in sales long enough to be very careful of "Deals".

When I buy a firearms it's to fill a need or perceived need. They are tools to do a job like a hammer or saw. When the job is over or I don't think I'll have that need again. I'll sell or trade for the next one. I've owned great guns but I have no sentimental attachment to any of them.

I research and buy the best I can justify for the need. I always buy quality new or used.

Getting right the 1at time is more important that saving a few $$. Especially if you don't buy twice for the same need. I've always felt a firearm is not something to get cheap about.

I've missed several good deals because I wanted to research. A 3" M66 leaps to mind. I didn't know what I was looking at. Went back to get it.... gone. :( There are others.

As you gain knowlege you'll be better prepared to pounce on that smokin' deal when it comes along. You'll also be better able to recognize when you should just walk away.

Very good point! I do have a future need/want list and I've done my research already including range time with the help of friends.

I stumbled on a possible(???) Alaskan Moose hunt this fall, I would buy a Marlin 1895GBL 45-70.

I have to think most people also look forward and do some pre-buy research.

One of the benefits of working gun shows (I sell holsters) is having the opportunity to buy guns from people walking the show looking to sell their guns.

I don't start out looking for any particular gun, but if it is something I am interested in, and the price is right, I will buy it.

Here are a few I picked up this year. Most in 95% condition, a few in 90%.

Beretta .32 Tomcat ANIB w/papers $175.00
Charter Arms Bulldog SS .44 Special 2-1/2" bbl $250.00
Charter Arms Bulldog Blue .44 Special 4" Target $225.00
Colt New Frontier 45 Colt 7-1/2" bbl 2nd series $400.00
NAA 22 LR Mini Revolver $100.00
Rossi M720 SS .44 Special 3" bbl $225.00
S&W 10-5 Blue 6" Tapered bbl w/diamond magnas numbered to the gun $200.00
S&W 13-1 Blue .357 Mag 4" bbl P&R $300.00
S&W 15-4 Blue .38 Special 4" bbl $260.00
S&W 27-3 Nickel .357 Mag 6" bbl $350.00
S&W 65-5 SS .357 Mag 3" bbl Round Butt $350.00. This is one I was actually looking for. Actually looking for one P&R, but this will do until one comes along.
S&W 617-1 SS .22LR 6 shot 6" bbl. $525.00. This is another one I was on the lookout for.
S&W 629-1 SS .44 Mag 8-3/8" bbl target stocks. $600.00

Only two of these were on my wish list, but the prices were too good to pass up.
Would any of you have?
Not bragging, but there are still great deals out there.
I am just fortunate to be at gun shows every weekend.

You might want to check with an Alaskan Guide before you spend your money.
Most will recommend a 30 cal magnum in SS with a composite stock for moose. It's cold and WET that time of year....

OTOH - Everyone needs at least one 45-70 :) I like the Ruger #1, but every time I see one by the time I think about spending the bucks it's GONE :(

I usually have a list of must have guns for my own use. I tend to accumulate vs. collect. I tend to research planned purchases to death. I'm partial to older, 50's - mid-80's, K and N frames. While I own the odd Beretta or SIG a large portion of my accumulation is S&W.

Most are just used at the range as I don't carry or hunt. I generally pay a fair price for those handguns or rifles I choose to own. I can't say I have found many deals for those items I want.

More than half of my purchases in the past 3 years were via the internet. Many from this forum. I hope to have most of my wants filled before retirement in about another year. The safe will be full by then. The remaining purchases were/are from 2 LGS's.

Stu, your list makes me ill. A .45 New Frontier for $400?
I buy at lgs, shows, online auctions, from members here, or wherever I can, legally. Guns are tools, man toys, and investments. I got money, what cha got?

Sorry about that. LOL. That is the great thing about doing 50 gun show a year.
You just never know what will come down the aisle.

I pay cash for my guns and i usually just keep my eyes open for a good deal. When i see a good gun deal and it is a gun i would like to have and i have enough money to buy it i purchase the gun.

CASH

I try to keep about a grand in my wallet, because you never know when a good deal will pop up. Hundred dollar bills are great persuaders.
