How do you classify this .44 load?

Other than the jacketed bullet, I call it "Elmer Keith's original concept", what he wanted the .44 Magnum to be. Remington and S&W did him one better, with original factory loads being closer to 1450 fps. Loads the level of this one are very effective, and a heckuva lot more pleasant to shoot than full-out loads.

I have fired some of this ammo in my Smiths. As .44 Magnums go, it is pretty mild. At 1180 fps, it is over 300 fps slower than the original .44 Remington Magnum ammo.

I like it for pins, plates, paper, and anything competition. It is consistent with manageable recoil... It also serves as my factory load for occasional carrying of my 29-2 with the 6.5-inch bbl. It is accurate, and won a trophy for a “Dirty Harry” shoot I participated in during 1999. I was the only competitor with a S&W .44 Magnum in the contest, but I attribute the "win" to the ammo's accuracy and manageable recoil.

I'm wary of Magtech in small calibers but I bought a box in .44 Mag when it was all I could find. It wasn't bad at all: accurate, not too dirty, less than average kick in my Super Blackhawk. I prefer 240gr loads.
After running through the box it had me wondering where they dropped the ball in small loads (.32ACP and .380ACP). I had multiple FTF and partial FTE in very box I shot. I finally gave up the brand entirely until the .44 a while back.

standard velocity for 240 jsp's with Federal American Eagle and Winchester White Box loads being about the same

This would be considered a midrange load, probably one of the lighter factory loads.

Midrange, and would work for about 75% of your needs.
Down at that velocity I'd be more likely to go a Keith SWC if for hunting and S/D, or a hollow point for S/D rather than with a jacketed soft point? JOMO?
