How do you guys afford our gun habit?

Currently putting my third through college. I worked very hard (like most of you) and got very lucky (like some) and am making it work (like all of you). As Ayn Rand said: "I swear by my life and my love of it that I will not live for the sake of another man, nor ask for another man to live for mine". And in the way I think of it: don't ask me to help you and I will not ask for help from you. Might sound tough but that is the way it is... Bottom line... My hard work has given me some "gun money".

Recently I've sold two guns to make ends meet. One I'm glad to be rid of and the other not so much.

Fortunately my wife does not complain about my gun hobby and spending, probably because I don't spend much on other activities. What I spend we can afford anyway.

Sell the kids off into slavery!!! USED to have 5 boys! down to a cpl now... HAHAHAHHAHHA

Actually, I bought a lot cash and carry when single, and have done a ton of horse trading. Plus nowadays, I sometimes get away with buying guns for the kids so we can shoot together. I AM blessed with 5 boys and a very understanding wife!

Empty nesters, and been retired just over 4 years. Wife still works and knew of my strong interests early on. She had her own gun safe when we met. I've been accumulating since I was a teenager.
I work about 3 days a week at a GS/Range and do firearms instruction for a small firm many weekends.
Wife is really understanding as I live a fairly tame existence including inshore/offshore fishing, yardwork, caring for our vehicles, etc.
All my rowdy friends have settled down.

I've used the envelope thing in the past.
Currently it's just good economics in my life - self employment and that's working well of late (got the biz debt all gone).
Been thinking of getting newer cars - never buy new - but the cost of 'better' than we have is still more than I want to spend, so I'll deal with the hassles of repairs as needed. (To upgrade 1 car to something 3 years newer and 50k less miles is about $12k - that buys a LOT of guns and ammo)

Also, reload and buy in bulk. If you go spend $400 on components you can shoot a year perhaps and not really concern yourself over the cost. I just got powder, primers and bullets for 1000 30-06 for $275. Mil surplus ammo runs twice that, assuming it all fires.

I spent the children's inheritance. I had $5700 in company stock purchase plan at time of layoff. Value of the stock was $3700. I was patient for 19 months and sold all stock at $11,700. I put $6K in an IRA and carefully bought 15 guns of quality that I wanted -- mostly S&W revolvers with a couple of rifles. I have all the guns I've ever wanted and 2or 3 extra. Mrs Engineer got more than she can shoot. Guilt is wonderful.

My wife and I are frugal, credit card paid in full every month, no mortgage, no smoking, no mortgage, and NO JOB :D. Reload ammo and cast bullets, bought 10 years of components pre-Obama when I did have a job. What primer shortage?
