I've got several different guns, Smiths, Glocks, CZ's etc; with multiple magazines. I'm trying to decide how the best way to store them. Has anyone come up with a really neat idea on storage and easy identification? I usually keep mine in chest drawers and thinking about making a slotted board of some sort that would allow me to insert the mags in, top first into a slot. What are your ideas!

When I read the title of your post....

I thought that I keep most of my spare magazines in plastic boxes under my bed. You know old, gun magazines, airplane magazines, chess magazines. Ammo magazines??? I don't have any, but I'm trying to get some spares.

I keep all my magazines loaded and in my gun safe In my Fortress of Solitude (A bedroom vacated by the youngest bird to fly the coop). for the handguns Each one and it magazines has it's own shelf. I have several revolvers and for the DAs I have speed loaders loaded and ready to go. My 10/22 and my Colt AR are the only long guns I have. I have 10 round and 25 round magazines for the 10/22 and 20 and 30 round magazines for the Colt.

The long guns stand on one in and their magazines rest comfortably in the floor of the safe. When I shoot I rotate magazines/speed loaders so that the ones that have been loaded the longest are the next ones to use. I also have more ammo for everything than I have magazines I have that on a narrow top shelf in the gun safe and some more on the floor next to the magazines. I store this ammo in the blue Berry's ammo boxes. I will not store ammo in paper boxes or anything that would attract or absorb moisture. I also have 3 large dessicate bags here and there in the safe.

I use to have about 7 different magazines just for 45 ACP, I sold off everything that didn't use a 1911 or a Sig 220 mag. I have since violated this rule only once with a double stack. 1911's are the weapon of late night comfort in this house, so many magazines are loaded and at various places. No matter what size gun I pick up in the dark; officers, commander, full size or something in between a standard or 8 shot 1911 mag is a reload. Most others and rifle mags are in one big plastic container, I wouldn't want anyone to think I was OCD. Ivan

I use the bags that Crown Royal comes in to separate magazines by gun. It works for me!

I store mine in the 50 cal ammo cans. Most of my mags i get from midway and they come in a zip lock back with a white label with mag info. The ones i dont get from midway i put in zip lock bags and make a label with what mags are in it. Easy to know whats in the bags and being zip lock bags i guess its some what water proof and the 50 cal ammo cans stack nicely and can take a beating if needded. I pretty much stick evetyhing i can in the 50 cal ammo cans, i do need to label my cans but the mothed i use now is the ones that are super heavy are the ones stuffed with ammo the ones with cleaning supplys are mid heavy and the ones with mags are pretty light.

I have a ZCORR VCI anti-corrosion bag for each of my guns and store the mags in one of the bags when I'm not using them.

a slight hi-jack

How long can you store loaded magazines before worrying about the compressed spring?

A compressed spring should not go bad in a lifetime. What wears springs is the number of compressions and relaxations of the spring. There have been some reports of this but they are usually older weapons. On a modern firearm I would not worry.

No Playboys... M'kay...

My 'hood is all dirt & dust. I keep a few loaded with some of the pistols and the rest live in Ziplock freezer bags in a plastic toolbox.

The bags are labled but it doesn't always work. Got to the range last week & went to load up the wife's Mosquito. I pulled out the bag & it was full of 22/45 mags...:o

The ones that get used regularly get lightly oiled with Rig #2 Oil and stored on a shelf in my gun room. The ones that are extras, surplus and repetitive get thoroughly coated with RIG UNIVERSAL GREASE inside & out and wrapped in waxed paper and then aluminum foil. Then I put a label on them noting what they are and store them in an old (but clean ) tool box.
The ones that came with the gun are in the original boxes and have a light coat of Rig #2 Oil on them
