The S&W book says there were 100. I've read several threads saying 1500 were marked Model of 1950 versus 1955. Does anyone really know? Also, what would the original shipping have been. The Box in a Box in a Box?

Go over to GunBroker auction # 213666188. One just sold for just short of a grand. They say in the narrative 1000 so marked.

Yes, it should have been a packing box with a no label box and PC inside...

As I indicated on the other thread I have two of them, both purchased new in 1976 and I'm the original owner. Your box appears to be the correct box as both of mine are in identical boxes.

I too am interested in the final production numbers as they were never made available to my knowledge. All I have is the Jinks letter sent to me below dated Jan. 1977 and it doesn't address specific numbers. Everyone with one of these extraordinary pistols is invited to capture a copy of it if they wish...

I know of several owners of 1955 mis-marks indicating they have them on this board. I hope everyone who has one will post to this thread with any information they have or can glean from any reliable source.

I own one, serial# N 338239.
I don't have any of my reference materials handy, but as I recall the info in the S&W book is a typo error and approximately 1500 were made with the mis-stamped barrel.

I own # N338641. I believe that a survey will show all are within the N330000 range. The funny thing was about a month after I bought it, the same shop took another one with the 1950 markings in on consignment. I don't remember the exact serial number but it was within a few hundred of mine. I think a number of 100 assembled is low, but 1000 or 1500 barrels being stamped incorrectly before the error was caught seems high. Probably only a few hundred barrels were made in .45 cal. at a time to match up with projected Model 25-2 sales demand. A model like the 25-2 was not a high demand item or big seller in 1977 like a Model 19 would have been for example.

Thanks for the info. Mine is serial number N339708. These are a "handfull" of good looking gun.

Knowing S&W history for "using everything" it wouldn't surprise me that any 1950 marked barrels were used on the 25-2 until they were all used up. I seriously doubt if more than a handful were ever returned for a "correct" barrel to be installed. As many as seem to be surfacing, it had to be way more than 100 mismarked.

However, if you wish to have the stamping corrected you may return the gun to the factory and we will be pleased to make this correction at no charge.

LOL:D

Sorry about your defective purchase. Quality just ain't what it used to be. I'm a nice guy & would be happy to take it off yer hands. As a favor, of course.

That's what I thought too.....

So few people have checked in on this thread and other threads relating to this issue that it makes one wonder.

I've seen posts on this forum indicating at least three other members other than those who have posted here have them, including one member who is a moderator. The silence of response seems "deafening" on this particular firearm and I've gotta wonder why...

This forum would seem to be the most knowledgeable resource for this type issue..... Anybody else???

I have one...purchased from a forum member last summer. I don't have access to the serial number at the moment but I'll edit this post to add it later tonight. It is N33853X

TDC, I would very much like a "copy" of your letter. Not including your personal information of course, but something that I could generate a printable version to keep with my gun that highlights Mr Jinks comments. Would you be willing to scan and email me a copy? I would be willing to compensate you if needed. Capturing the image file does not render a printable format for me.

I have to say that my 25-2 is one of the last I would part with. It has the best trigger of any gun I own, is scary accurate even in these mitts and pretty much lives in my range bag....just an absolute pleasure to pound paper with. It will be my son's gun one of these days.

PM me your mailing address and I'll send you a scanned copy. It may be a couple of weeks before I can get it to you.. :) It would be interesting if someone who has one would request a factory letter about their 1950 mis-mark to see how the firearm is described today...

Hello

I just purchased a 25-2 with a 6.5 1950 marked barrel serial number N3387XX. It has what looks to be a factory red ramp front and white outline rear sight. Does anyone know how many model 25-2's came with RR/WO? Thanks

Steve

as an addition to the discussion, three members of my bullseye shooting club bought those mis-marked model 25s, all came from Gil Hebard guns of Knoxville, IL., as ordered model 25-2's.

two of the three would key-hole 45 bullets at 25 yards, mine was fine. the other two were returned to S&W for new barrels, which were marked correctly when they came back, and they shot accurately with no key-holes. we were interested in shooting the guns, not collecting, at that time. Mine is still in its original factory box with its original mis-marked barrel.

If my memory serves me we heard of several others that were returned because the barrels would key-hole shots, even at 25 yards.

Just to add to the discussion.;
