How many ARs do you suppose it is worth stocking up on?

For a minor's scalper's tariff (watcha gonna do), I'm trading into the complete upper (RRA M4 type) that will become the basis for my fifth. I have around 80 asst'd mags (loaded) plus more ammo loose. I can "grandfather" this RRA lower in about 30 seconds by swapping an upper off one of my other M4 clones, but hope to find an upper for it within the week. I'm thinking that I want at least two or three more ARs after that to hedge against having more children.

I realize that everyone has been chasing EBRs lately, but does anyone else have a habit of getting a number of these?

(Two Colts, one CMMG, one CMMG/Colt hybrid offspring, and now the RRA give me enough for the wife and two kids that I have now. Figured that I needed spares though since the wife is of Irish extraction which will inevitably mean either more children or another wife at some point...)

I'm glad I read the entire post before suggesting that you could insure, not just hedge against having more children with a more appropriate tool than a rifle, say, a Swiss Army knife....

It's more a matter of they'll all need their own EBR to play with. It's "for the children" after all. I actually like kids and hope to have enough that they can form their own rugby team or some such.

What are you gonna feed them all (the AR's, not the kids)? Sounds like you don't have enough ammo and it's a little late to be stocking up now.

... and what if you can only get .30-06 or .308 cartridges (or 7.62x39) in 20 years? Wouldn't it be better to diversify the chamberings, so you'd be able to utilize any ammo you can scrounge?

I will admit, it would make a nice Christmas card. Momma, Poppa and a whole flock of little gators, each with their own AR!

Seems like 2 is enouhg for me.

And my Spikes .22 upper, I have less than 100,000 .22 rimfire rounds though. I'd like to stock up. I can't afford to feed the AR's other then a few thousand rounds.

....or maybe some kind of special forces extraction team....

Oh yes you must cover all the bases's. To be sure, I covered most of the base's, I have two AR's, one in M-4 and one standard service config. Three AK-47,s. Two M-1 Garands, one in 30-06 and one in 7.62 NATO. Three riot, "tactical" shotguns, and a bunch of military bolt guns in various calibers with plenty of ammo for all. No wonder I am broke most of the time! I think I have a problem, but I like it!

Oh I have the other things - a FAL, AK clone, M1 carbine,Mini 14 and 30, 7mm Mag, .30-30,.308 bolt gun and .30-06 covering the (somewhat) common sporting and EBR calibers. I have more 5.56 than I have loaded into mags (my idea of "some" is larger than most people's, but is a good vague place holder term). I probably am short on mags though, since I've yet to reach the magic triple digits on AR mags.

I've found that despite the... is hysteria a good term? or is it prudent squirrel like gathering... that one can still get an AR easily enough with a relatively small scalper's premium. In some cases it is as little at 10 to 15 percent over what pre craziness prices were running. The trick is to find an upper here, a lower there, etc. An extra .38 snub or hi cap auto that was gathering dust actually works better than cash in tracking down odds and ends these days, esp if one obtained those at pre election pricing.

Well, that's another good reason to buy the AR platform: uppers in multiple calibers. Ar's will always have parts and mag availabilty-even on the Black Market. In fact, many participants in the future black market are probably viewing this right now. It's going to be a shame when they finally make us into criminals because we believe in the Constitution and our inalienable rights, while the other side only honors the aliens rights.

I believe the next ban will be permanent and make transfers illegal. Keep those 40 receivers until you die and then your kids get to carry them down to the police station to get chopped up.

Gator what are you trying to accomplish with that stockpile? You buying it all as an investment? Or, are you anticipating some kind of "end of the world" scenario. I won't tell another adult how to spend his own money. On the other hand, investments can be tricky and what looks like a sure thing today can turn bad down the road (thinking about my 401K here). If its the end of society kind of thing, think about how many guns and how much ammo is out there right now. Can you imagine what's going to happen when all these people have to use these tools? All you would have to do is sit tight and two weeks after the collapse there will be more assault rifles laying around than you can pick up.

To each his own: I have two and figure its more than I need. Most likely I'd run out of ammo or breath before I'd be hurting for another.

Well, Gator, I'm with you. Let's just say I have several AR's, each of a different configuration. I have more than I have kids. I have them because I enjoy them. I also have M1's, M1A's, FAL's, etc., and I enjoy them too. Maybe they will eventually be a good investment, maybe they won't, I don't really care. That isn't why I bought them. Some folks have lots of S&W's, and I have a few too. Good for 'em, they should buy what they want to their little heart's content. And "need" has nothing to do with it. If it was a question of "need," I'd have a 12 ga. pump gun and a .22, and that would be it. I say enjoy what you have and buy as many more as you want to.

Only what you can carry and shoot till the next supply point.

You've never been deployed in combat have you?

I am certainly not going to dog on Gator for having multiple ARs. I am a big believer in redundancy.

Having duplicates on hand simplifies logistics. For example I have 3 Glock 19 9mms, 2 Glock 21 .45s, a few ARs, a bunch of Model 29 Smith and Wessons and a bunch of spare parts for them. I also keep 2 shovels in my truck. I have redundant first aid kits and fire extinguishers.

It just seems to make sense.

I'm with imashooter2 on this one. If they win congress with enough of a like-minded majority mid-term, then they get around to banning them Austrailia/GB style, it won't do any good to have them. I'd stock up on lever-actions. It'll take the public sheeple a while to be indoctrinated that they are evil and dangerous and no one should have them.

Like some have said, as many as you want and can feed. I just bought my Sig 556 but I'm looking to add an AR to the stable as well. I don't foresee having nearly as many as you though.
